Equatio
Equatio is an assistive technology and digital equation editor that makes math and STEM content more accessible and easier to create digitally. It enables users to create accessible digital math content through speech input, handwriting recognition, drawing, and a screenshot reader that converts inaccessible math from the web into editable text. Additionally, it can be integrated with platforms like Google Docs and Microsoft Word.
This software is available to all students, staff, and faculty for free by selecting the “Sign in with Microsoft” option and entering your FAU email address.

Mathpix Snip
Mathpix Snip is a tool that utilizes optical character recognition (OCR) to convert Text and mathematical/STEM equations from images and PDFs into machine-readable formats, such as LaTeX and MathML. It is designed for users to quickly copy equations and text from documents, screenshots, or even handwriting and paste them into applications like Microsoft Word, Google Docs, or a web-based editor. It also provides an all-in-one solution for creating, editing, and sharing Mathpix Markdown documents online. The tool also offers features like a searchable PDF repository, automatic PDF metadata extraction, and cross-device syncing.

Visual Math Editor
Visual Math Editor is a LaTeX, AsciiMath, and MathML editor developed in JavaScript and HTML. It operates independently on the web or locally. It features many menus that facilitate equation entry and enable posting and backup.

AsciiMath
AsciiMath is a simple markup language for writing mathematical notation that can be converted into MathML for display on web pages. It uses calculator-style syntax, making it easy to write and read, and is converted to standard mathematical notation by a JavaScript script when the page loads. This allows users to embed complex math formulas in HTML and other web content without needing special characters or a complex editor.

MathJax
MathJax is an open-source, cross-browser JavaScript library that renders mathematical formulas written in LaTeX, MathML, or AsciiMath formats on web pages. It provides high-quality, text-based typesetting for mathematics, ensuring consistency across various browsers and operating systems, and offers features such as screen reader support for enhanced accessibility. MathJax can convert LaTeX into MathML for faster rendering or easy copying, and its modular design and API allow for customization and interactive math experiences on the web.

LaTeX for Math
LaTeX is a powerful document preparation system used to create professionally formatted documents with consistent, high-quality mathematical typesetting for complex formulas, symbols, and notation. It works by using specific markup commands, which are interpreted and rendered by the LaTeX engine to produce clean, readable output in papers, books, exams, and other academic or scientific documents.

Mathematical expressions (Overleaf)
An online LaTeX editor that is easy to use. No installation, real-time collaboration, version control, hundreds of LaTeX templates, and more.

Writing Formulas and Equations (Latex) for Assignments in Gradescope
This guide helps instructors format math and chemistry notation in Gradescope using quick LaTeX shortcuts to add clear, professional formulas as they grade.

Sciweavers
Sciweavers is a free online suite of tools for scientific productivity, including a LaTeX equation editor and document/image conversion tools.

MathML
MathML is an XML-based markup language for encoding mathematical and scientific notation, allowing it to be displayed and interchanged on web pages and other documents. Developed under the World Wide Web Consortium, it enables browsers and other software to render complex equations, and critically, facilitates accessibility by allowing for automated conversion to formats like braille or audio.

This is a Knowledgebase article about how to make mathematical equations in web content accessible to assistive technology.

LaTex for Chemistry (Overleaf)
For LaTeX in Chemistry, the primary tools are the mhchem package for formatting chemical formulas and equations, and the chemfig package for drawing structural formulae and reaction diagrams. Other helpful packages include siunitx for SI units and chemmacros for more complex reactions and documentation.

MolView App for Chemistry
Chrome app MolView aims to enable users to visualize various molecular and ionic structures. MolView consists of two main parts: a structural formula editor and a 3D model viewer. The user can draw a compound or select from a list of compounds in three databases. Once a compound has been selected, the user can click the “2D to 3D” button to convert the molecule into a 3D model, which is then displayed in the viewer located on the right side of the screen.

LaTex for Physics (Overleaf)
LaTeX for physics is a document preparation system used to create high-quality, professional scientific documents, with a particular strength in accurately typesetting complex mathematical equations, symbols, and formulas. It is widely adopted in the physics community because it allows users to focus on content rather than design, ensuring a consistent and professional look for notes, papers, and presentations.

Music Vibes (available for IOS)

Chrome Music Lab
Chrome Music Spectrogram
A visual tool to show the spectrogram for sound, with interactivity via a built-in microphone or tracing the contour via the cursor. Visual representation may be helpful for individuals with hearing difficulties, and the interface may be beneficial for students with mobility disabilities that restrict their ability to play instruments.Chrome Music Sound Waves
A tool using a keyboard device that relates pitch to vibrating dots in a grid pattern. As pitch increases, the dotes oscillate faster to illustrate the relationship between pitch and the movement of sound waves. This could be helpful for students with hearing diagnoses to help develop a framework for sound and pitch in music.
Gesture-based Music via Adaptive (available for IOS)
| Gesture-based Music via Adaptive Use for Musical Instrument (AUMI) is an ongoing project by the Deep Listening Institute, which has developed an interface that enables users to play sounds and musical phrases through movement and gestures, with the original focus on working with children who have profound physical disabilities. Using an IOS device and a camera, performers can interact with a gesture-based screen to play chosen sounds and phrases. Given the initial intent for the application, it may prove especially useful for students with motor function diagnoses that may prevent them from playing a traditional instrument. Zones called “sound boxes” can be established on the interactive screen, which are then assigned notes or other sounds that play when the camera detects motion over that sound box. |

Accessibility Checkers

ANDI
Accessible Name & Description Inspector (ANDI) is a free accessibility testing tool used to check websites for compliance with web accessibility standards. This tool functions as a “bookmarklet,” and overlays its results directly onto the page, making accessibility issues visible and easy to inspect.

Accessibility Scanner for Android
Accessibility Scanner is a free Android app from Google that automatically analyzes an app’s user interface for common accessibility issues, such as small touch targets, low text contrast, and unlabeled images. It highlights these problems with suggestions for improvement, helping developers and testers identify and fix barriers to make their apps more inclusive for people with disabilities.

Accessibility Inspector for IOS
Accessibility Inspector is a developer tool within Xcode that helps creators test and debug the accessibility of iOS, macOS, and other Apple platform apps by auditing for common issues, displaying accessibility information for UI elements, and testing how the app interacts with system accessibility features. It functions as a diagnostic tool to ensure apps are usable by people with disabilities, identifying problems such as missing element descriptions, insufficient contrast, and navigation issues

Clipchamp utilizes its AI-powered feature within the video editor, which automatically transcribes spoken content in a video or audio track into real-time subtitles.

Mediasite
Add and edit captions using Caption Editor
Mediasite captions are text transcripts of the spoken audio in a video presentation, created either automatically using automatic speech recognition (ASR) or by manually uploading pre-made caption files.

YouTube
YouTube captions are a text version of a video’s dialogue and essential sound effects, designed to be turned on or off by the viewer. They serve to make videos accessible to people who are deaf or hard of hearing, as well as those who watch videos without sound, and improve the overall user experience. YouTube automatically generates many captions using AI, but creators can also manually add or edit them for accuracy.

Zoom
In Zoom, a “caption” refers to live text that appears on screen, showing a real-time transcription of the audio from a meeting or webinar. Captions can be generated automatically using Zoom’s live transcription service, provided manually by a designated person (a captioner), or delivered via a third-party service.
