University Dress Code Standard

University employees are required to wear business or business casual attire, unless otherwise permitted or approved.

Business Attire: should be worn when representing FAU at meetings or events where business attire is standard. This includes:

  • Business suits, and ties (if applicable)
  • Collared shirts with sports coats
  • Business socks and shoes
  • Blouses and/or sweaters
  • Dress pants
  • Dresses and skirts of business length

Business Casual Attire: may be worn for day-to-day University business where business attire is not required or expected. This includes:

  • Collared shirts such as polos (with or without FAU logo) or dress shirts
  • Dress pants and khaki pants
  • Blouses and/or sweaters (with or without FAU logo)
  • Skirts and dresses of business length
  • Business casual shoes

Summer Tropical Ease Attire: applicable only by special university announcement.  May be worn during summer months as set forth by university.

  • Collared shirts such as polos (with or without FAU logo) or dress shirts
  • Dress pants and khaki pants
  • Blouses and/or sweaters (with or without FAU logo)
  • Skirts and dresses of business length
  • Business casual shoes
  • Jeans are permitted (no frayed bottom, faded, or ripped jeans)

Special Requirements, Accommodations, or exceptions:

  1. Identification: Employees in community-facing roles, such as, but not limited to, interaction with students, faculty, staff, and at events shall identify themselves using University-issued identification, such as, but not limited to, identification (I.D).tags, or name badges.
  2. Uniforms: For roles requiring uniforms, a standard should be developed by the unit and approved by the area Vice President.
    1. Basic Requirements: A neat, clean, and identifiable appearance must be maintained regardless of any accommodations and exceptions granted.
    2. Outdoor or Physical Work Requirements: Areas with outside and/or physical work requirements may choose to allow attire not included in the University’s standard, such as shorts or T-shirts as an approved exception, provided that there is no increased risk of physical injury.

Inappropriate Attire

The following attire is not permitted unless an approved exception or accommodation is made:

  • Items bearing slogans, pictures, or captions
    FAU logo merchandise is acceptable during business casual and tropical ease or spirit days as designated by the university.
  • Collegiate apparel other than Florida Atlantic University
  • Overalls and athletic wear, such as, sweats, workout clothes, or jogging suits
  • Beachwear, tank tops, halter tops, and T-shirts
  • Shorts, cutoffs, culottes
  • Medical scrubs
  • Flip-flops, slippers, and slides
  • Torn, frayed or ragged attire. 

*This standard does not apply to employees whose positions are included in a collective bargaining unit.
