How to Become a Florida Contractor

How to Become a General, Building or Residential Contractor
  1. Determine whether you are qualified for licensure as a contractor.  Study Florida Statutes 489.111.If you are not sure whether or not you are qualified for licensure under the statute, write an email to the DBPR by  clicking here.They will respond promptly and your answer will be in writing.
  2. Study the  Candidate Information Booklet  (Tambien disponible en español).
  3. Register for the exam.  Examination Registration Instructions and Application  (Note the exam dates and locations. Step 6.3)
  4. Purchase books required for the open book exam.
  5. Study the Examination Content Information Booklets.
    1. All Trades should review the  BUSINESS AND FINANCE  Sections
    2. Then  Choose Your Trade  from the list on the DBPR website
  6. Review the following helpful documents:
    1. Frequently Asked Questions  for the CILB, Fingerprinting, and Exam
    2. Exam dates and locations.
  7. Study for the exam.  Register for the two courses that will prepare you to pass the exam the first time. Note: Registering for FAU's courses is optional. We are here to help you.   Click here  for more information on the Contractor Exam Preparation courses at FAU.
  8. Pass the exam.
  9. Apply for your license with the Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR).
