THE BERLIN DIARIES
by Andrea Stolowitz
A National New Play Network Rolling World Premiere
Nov. 18 - Dec. 10 2023
"The power of Stolowitz’s writing coupled with Stabile’s smart direction and the astute acting chops of Hoffman and Fridh make The Berlin Diaries a master class in acting."
- Oline H. Cogdill, Florida Theater On Stage
"Avi Hoffman and Niki Fridh each take on 14 characters, often switching roles one line at a time. And they shine while doing so, under Matt Stabile’s sensitive direction, smart staging, and pacing."
- Aaron Krause, Theatrical Musings
"Stolowitz’s story is the story of the Jewish people post-World War II, of family trees damaged and nearly felled by genocide, of scattered connections and hidden linkages just waiting to be uncovered."
- John Thomason, Boca Mag
The great-grandfather of Oregon Book Award-winning playwright Andrea Stolowitz kept a journal for his descendants after escaping to New York City in 1939 as a German Jew.
Following the complicated lure of genealogy, Stolowitz goes back to Berlin to bring the story of her unknown ancestors out of the archives into the light. In this complex, contemporary drama about the search for home, fragmented heritage and Jewish diaspora, two performers scintillate between characters and locations at the border of reality and memory and the intersection of national history and private lives.
