Braxton McLean worked with Dr. Reza Azarderakhsh to improve the overall efficiency of encryption schemes by increasing the speed of performed arithmetic at a hardware level. Arithmetic, like modular multiplication, is performed hundreds of times in various key exchange schemes and greatly effects efficiency. Braxton focused on isogeny based elliptic curve cryptography, which aims to be “quantum safe,” meaning there are no known algorithms to compute the information in a reasonable time, even with capable quantum computers, coming in the future. Current encryption schemes, primarily RSA and ECC, are weak to certain implementations only available to quantum computers. Therefore, the team aims to preemptively replaced the current schemes with future proofed ones.
