FAU to Host Events in Honor of Hispanic/Latina/o/x Heritage Month

Florida Atlantic University will celebrate Hispanic/Latina/o/x Heritage with a series of events beginning Thursday, Sept. 15 through Saturday, Oct. 15 at its Boca Raton, Jupiter and Broward campuses. The events are free and open to the public.

The 2022 theme is “Unidos: Inclusivity for a Stronger Nation,” to honor the cultures and contributions of both Hispanic and Latina/o/x Americans as we celebrate heritage rooted in all Latin American countries.

The following events will take place at FAU’s Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road:

LSU Coffee House
Thursday, Sept. 15 from 6 to 8 p.m.
Live Oak A and B, Student Union

The LSU coffee house is an event presented by Latina/o/x Student Union which includes music, performances, coffee and pastries.

FAU vs UCF Paraíso Tailgate
Saturday, Sept. 17 from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m.
Palm Beach State Aqua Parking Lot

The tailgate will bring students together to celebrate the Hispanic/Latina/o/x community at both Hispanic-Serving institutions.

Noche de Eloteria
Thursday, Sept. 22 from 6 to 8 p.m.
Palms MPR, Student Union

Join Alpha Psi Lambda National, Inc. to play Lotería (games) while they make Elotes (Mexican street corn on the cob).

Chisme x Café Podcast
Friday, Sept. 23 from 11 a.m. to noon

This interview-podcast style type of dialogue will feature one student and one professional of Hispanic/Latina/o/x cultural heritage for each session as they are asked personal and professional questions so the FAU community can get to know their fellow Owls.

FUTUROS Retreat
Saturday, Sept. 24 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Grand Palm Room, Student Union

The FUTUROS Retreat is a one-day, cohort-based retreat for participants to connect with one another, develop personal and professional skills, and begin transforming leadership potential into action. This year’s focus is on encouraging participants to build comunidad (community), enhance their educational experiences and to reflect on the complex notions of their Latinidad (Latina/o/x identity). This event is hosted by the Society of Hispanic Engineering Professional to engage and inspire Hispanic youth to pursue STEM degrees and careers.

Casita FAU
Monday, Sept. 26 from 1 to 3 p.m.
Live Oak, Student Union

Program Board and Multicultural Programming will be incorporate the “Encanto” movie theme along with the Colombian culture that the movie is inspired by through food, craft and entertainment.

Latinx Mental Health
Monday, Sept. 26 from 3 to 4 p.m.
Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS)

CAPS will host an informative workshop about mental health among Latinx communities, with a focus on areas of suffering as well as well-being and resiliency within Latin culture.

Un Verano Con APsi: Enséñame a Relajar
Thursday, Sept. 29 from 6 to 8 p.m.
Majestic Palm, Student Union

Join Alpha Psi Lambda National, Inc.to talk about stresses that come with being a first-generation college student or a college student in a Hispanic/Latinx household.

Come celebrate Homecoming with the friends that become your familia. There will be food, music, crafts and dancing.

National Latino AIDS Awareness Day (NLAAD)
Friday, Oct. 14 from 8 a.m. to noon

Student Health Services is offering one-day appointments (required) for no cost HIV screening. This event provides an opportunity to reach the Latinx/Hispanic campus community by promoting HIV testing and providing HIV prevention education.

Noche de Caribe/Caribbean Night
Friday, Oct. 14 from 7 to 10 p.m.

An event to conclude Hispanic/Latina/o/x Heritage Month and celebrate Caribbean students, as well. The celebration will include dembo, reggaeton, salsa, merengue, bachata, reggae, calypso and more.

Come out to the Burrow to learn about Hispanic/Latina/o/x cultures and how to salsa dance from a professional instructor. Refreshments will be provided.

This event is intended as a celebration of the Hispanic language and culture. There will be a “Jeopardy” game to expand knowledge and appreciation of the distance Hispanic cultures and all they have to offer to the world.
