I’m passionate about engaging student voices into both my research and my teaching, especially by empowering minoritized students and reducing academic barriers. Although I was trained as a cancer biologist, my current research focuses on mechanisms to improve student success in science.  I have a National Science Foundation grant that evaluates how incorporating community-engaged learning into research courses changes students’ perceptions of and interest in research.  I enjoy research with interdisciplinary teams and have previously studied health disparities in immigrant and refugee communities.

I teach Biological Principles, Life Science, and Honors Thesis in Molecular Genetics, which focuses on identifying infections in gopher tortoises, a threatened species that is important for our local ecosystem. Gopher tortoises share the deep burrows that they dig with hundreds of other species and are protected under Florida state law. I’ve developed a new fascination of these critters. I use many diverse teaching strategies that researchers have shown are effective in helping students learn. I care about each and every student, and I’m really passionate about biology  – you’ll feel both of these emotions in my classes! I love helping students apply their biology content and skills to solve real world problems, particularly when we take an interdisciplinary focus.

I enjoy cycling, running, triathlons, paddleboarding, snorkeling, and golf – really anything that involves exercise and the outdoors. I’m excited to join a curling club. I like reading, though I more frequently listen to audiobooks. My husband and I are originally from Pittsburgh, PA, so we love all things black and gold (Go Steelers!). We also enjoy travelling, checking out breweries, and spending time with our dog and cats.
