Spring 2023 Honors Convocation Awards

Each year, the Division of Academic Affairs honors faculty and students who have made outstanding academic contributions to the university. These awards, which recognize individuals for teaching, advising, mentoring, research, and scholarly activities, were presented at the annual Honors Convocation, April 12, 2023, at the University Theatre in the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters.

 

The Researcher of the Year awards were created to honor excellence in sponsored and project-oriented research, and to recognize the outstanding work the faculty are doing in their field.  The College of Engineering and Computer Science had three awardees at various levels:

Dr. Fred Bloetscher, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies, and Community Outreach and Professor in the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatics Engineering received the Researcher of the Year Award at the Professor level for Sponsored Project-Oriented Activities.

Dr. Waseem Asghar, from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science received the Researcher of the Year Award at the Associate Professor level, for Sponsored Project-Oriented Activities.

Dr. Aditya Nayak, from the Department of Ocean and Mechanical Engineering received the Researcher of the Year Award at the Assistant Professor level for Sponsored Project-Oriented Activities.

Excellence and Innovation in Teaching and Advising awards are given to faculty and staff who are innovative in their approach to “enhancing instruction and advising”.  Dr. Mehrdad Nojoumian, Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science received an Award for Excellence and Innovation in Undergraduate Teaching for 2023, and Jessica Meith, Undergraduate Advisor the Division of Engineering Student Services and Advising office received an award for Excellence and Innovation in Undergraduate Advising for 2023.

There were also various student awards given to recognize outstanding student achievement:

Victor Zauder, senior in Mechanical Engineering, received the University Scholar Award for FAU’s College of Engineering and Computer Science. These awards are given to one student in each of our eight undergraduate Colleges in recognition of noteworthy achievement and upon the recommendation of faculty in the College.  

Valentina Rodriguez Ramirez, senior in Civil Engineering, received Florida Atlantic University’s 2023 University Club Merit Scholar award. The scholarship was created by members of the FAU Foundation’s University Club to highlight academic achievement.  

Lusner Ferdinand, junior in Civil Engineering, has been recognized with the 2022-23 Undergraduate Researcher of the Year award, which will include a stipend and an Undergraduate Research Scholar stole to be worn at graduation.
