MATH BOOT CAMP

Florida Atlantic University’s Math Boot Camp has been shown to significantly improve students’ chances   of success in lower-level mathematics courses. These successes can lead to timely graduation and degree completion.
The Math Boot Camp takes place in a self-paced relaxed atmosphere where students at every level can make significant improvements in their mathematics ability. At the same time, students will learn valuable study skills that will help them in their classes in the future.
The boot camp is staffed by qualified and trained instructors. The success of each student is important to us and we take care to personalize the experience of each and every participant.
At the conclusion of boot camp, the instructor will determine – based on assessment scores and boot camp performance – the appropriate next step for the student. Students who have not scored high enough to enroll in the desired course can either take a lower course appropriate for their score or repeat the boot camp until the score desired is reached.

The boot camp is open to all degree-seeking undergraduate students who wish to:

   1. Place into a higher level mathematics course by achieving a better score on the ALEKS  Math  Placement Exam.

   2. Improve their success in their next mathematics course or mathematics course  currently  underway.

   3. Review and improve their ability in mathematics after a long absence (one year of more).

The boot camp is required for the following two groups of students before enrolling in their next mathematics course:

   a. Students attempting the same mathematics course for the third time (or any subsequent attempt).

   b. All students entering FAU in their first year (FTIC students) who received  a grade of C- or below,

   c. Withdrawal (W) or an  NC grade in their last mathematics course

   d. Completed the spring semester with an un-recalculated FAU GPA of below 2.0 (based on the original grade before application of the NC grade).

Students may enroll in as many boot camps as they please.

Students should understand that success in mathematics, as in any field, requires effort. In addition to participation in a boot camp, students should:

  1. Attend every class and every lab. Poor attendance inevitably leads to course failure.
  2. Complete all homework and other assignments.
  3. Visit the Math Learning Center regularly. Location is in GS, second floor of the Center for Teaching and Learning.

  BOOT CAMP INFORMATION

The cost for each boot camp is $200.  Participants will be required to complete a minimum of 36 hours. To qualify for certain permits, students will also be required to reach a required minimum score on the placement exam given at the end of the Boot Camp.  Additional fees will include $33 ALEKS placement and Learning Modules that will be used during the Boot Camp.
