8:30 - 9:00 a.m.	BU-120	Welcome Welcome remarks by: Jason Ball, Associate Provost and Chief Information Officer, and Dr. Victoria Brown, Assistant Provost for eLearning Keynote - Internet of Things Jason Hallstrom, Ph.D. Florida Atlantic University \| College of Engineering and Computer Science Jason Hallstrom is a Professor in FAU’s College of Engineering and Computer Science and Director of the Institute for Sensing and Embedded Network Systems Engineering (ISENSE). ISENSE is an interdisciplinary research hub that tackles grand challenge problems through novel hardware, software, and ideas. Dr. Hallstrom develops small wireless sensing devices, ranging in size from a dime to a matchbox, that collect information about the environment and transmit it to cloud-based computing systems that store, analyze, and present that information to educators, researchers, and decision-makers. Applied sensing and the emerging “Internet of Things” provide endless possibilities for making the ‘invisible’ visible, both in the small and in the large. Technologies are being developed for a broad spectrum of applications and uses, ranging from monitoring physiological changes in senior patients to support aging in place, to mitigating natural and manmade disasters, such as hurricanes and biological threats. Emergency management decisions can be optimized to quickly commit personnel and resources to where they are needed most. Dr. Hallstrom’s research is supported by the National Science Foundation. He is working on the next generation of his water monitoring device, "Eiffel," to illustrate how this unique device can capture a birds-eye-view of Florida and beyond. He continues to lead technology development efforts for Clemson University’s Intelligent River® enterprise. http://isense.fau.edu/

9:15 - 10:00 a.m.	BU-109	Increasing Accessibility Through the Use of Assistive Technology Stuart Buckley Florida Atlantic University \| Student Accessibility Services This presentation examines the assistive technology tool solutions available to persons with disabilities, including screen readers, magnifiers and reading software, and alternative input devices.

Florida Atlantic University \| College of Medicine - Integrated Medical Science Department This demonstration of visual movement during a presentation will address such issues as whether movement is engaging or distracting and how to keep millennials’ attention in the classroom.

10:15 - 10:45 a.m.	BU-104	On-Demand Composition: Creating and Evaluating Short, Rapid-Response Writing Assignments for Mobile Devices Craig Rinne, Ph.D. Florida Atlantic University \| College of Business In the mobile era, the short, quickly composed message dominates, and immediate response to written messages is often crucial in a business context. This presentation explores the advantages and disadvantages of a mobile application for teaching writing, particularly business-oriented, time-sensitive messages. Examples of assignments and FAU student responses will be included.
10:15 - 10:45 a.m.	BU-109	Accessibility in an Online Environment - From a Learner’s Perspective Michael Huet, Judy Somers, and Brian Tighe Florida Atlantic University \| Center for eLearning Tracy Hill, Master’s Student Florida Atlantic University \| College of Education The Center for eLearning showcases the online course experience from a visually impaired student’s perspective. The student will join the presenters to demonstrate the use of equipment and tools to access and navigate online courses. Suggestions will be offered to instructors on how to improve course interaction for all students.
10:15 - 10:45 a.m.	BU-112	Simple as Click-2-3: Classroom Engagement with Padlet Rachael Neu, Lauri Rebar Florida Atlantic University \| Libraries This presentation explores Padlet, a free, easy-to-use online collaborative whiteboard that instructors of all levels can use to increase engagement and active learning in the classroom. Padlets are created by one person, who sets the rights, defines the privacy levels and layout, and provides editing rights to others. Content can be exported in a variety of formats and ways.
10:15 - 10:45 a.m.	BU-120	Extreme Make-Over: Blackboard Edition Connie Weber, Senior Customer Service Advocate Blackboard Features and functions in Blackboard evolve constantly, but many of us are not aware of these changes. Blackboard is here and now in 2016, but our courses may still be in 2012. Blackboard Senior Customer Service Advocate Connie Weber will share six features and resources you can use today to enhance the Blackboard experience for you and your students. Find out more about the resources you already use and learn about the many others you can start exploring.

11:00 - 11:30 a.m.	BU-104	Teachnology: Teaching Technology Across the Curriculum Mary Schindlbeck, Ph.D., and Jonathan Sweet Florida Atlantic University \| College of Business This presentation demonstrate how instructors can integrate effective technology tools across courses to encourage knowledge transfer from previous courses as well as improve retention and skill levels in those courses. This session is aimed at faculty who want to introduce technology into their courses to improve comprehension and also eliminate time-consuming by-hand exercises.
11:00 - 11:30 a.m.	BU-109	Introducing the FAU Accessible Format Materials Portal Stuart Buckley Florida Atlantic University \| Student Accessibility Services Attendees will learn how to utilize the recently launched FAU Accessible Format Materials Portal to create accessible alternative format materials not only to improve accessibility for students with disabilities but also to benefit students with different preferences for learning.
11:00 - 11:30 a.m.	BU-112	Collaborating with Owl Apps Kathleen McPherson, and Michael Huet Florida Atlantic University \| Center for eLearning Owl Apps is a free, secure, paperless way to organize and share documents and resources. Learn how to start using Owl Apps to foster student collaboration in group projects. Use Owl Apps to send meeting notes, even before your colleagues leave the room!
11:00 - 11:30 a.m.	BU-120	Exploring Canvas Dee Bohne, Senior Enterprise Director Canvas by Instructure Come see what makes Canvas the next generation digital learning environment. Openness, interoperability, personalization, and a modern UI are just a few of the features that make Canvas the most usable and adaptable platform for teaching and learning.

11:45 - 12:15 p.m.	BU-104	SurveyMonkey in the Classroom Jesse Saginor, Ph.D. Florida Atlantic University \| College for Design and Social Inquiry - School of Urban & Regional Planning SurveyMonkey enables students to use their phones to respond to in-class surveys. Student responses are used to drive course discussion. This methodology was used in a capital facility planning course to demonstrate public participation and build real-world planning scenarios, transforming lectures into practical participatory exercises.
11:45 - 12:15 p.m.	BU-109	Empowering Rural Residents to Access Web-Based Patient Teaching Materials Using IPads Lisa Wiese, Ph.D. Florida Atlantic University \| College of Nursing This presentation shares lessons learned from the trial use of IPADS and laptops to support efforts to introduce teaching technology to older rural, minority residents in “The Glades,” Florida, following hypertension and cognitive screenings. Ideas for research and health assessment are explored.
11:45 - 12:15 p.m.	BU-112	Let's Keep in Touch Judy Somers, Mary Rotundo Florida Atlantic University \| Center for eLearning Join us for a lively interactive session highlighting several ways to connect with your students. The presenters will share research on the importance of communication in your online courses. Participants will have the opportunity to engage using a variety of virtual communication tools and strategies. They will interact with peers to generate a listing of effective communication tools.
11:45 - 12:15 p.m.	BU-120	Blogging 101: How to Effectively Incorporate Blogging Assignments in Online Courses Jared Bucker, Ph.D. Nova Southeastern University \| Abraham S. Fischler School of Education This presentation focuses on how simple blogging tools can enhance student participation in distance education courses. A practical tutorial will demonstrate effective use of blogs to deliver course content.

12:30 - 2:00 p.m.	Sean Stein Pavilion (Lobby Area)	Lunch, Poster Sessions, & Raffle Universal Design and Discussion Board Forums: Using Writing Strategies, Rubrics, and Rules to Help Students Structure Online Discussion Board Posts Kristina Bielskus-Barone, Graduate Student/Adjunct Florida Atlantic University \| College of Education This poster explores the use of embedded writing strategies and teacher expectations to support a universal design approach to discussion boards that scaffold responses. This approach is especially helpful to those with disabilities who often have difficulty in unstructured writing environments, but it can improve student responses across the board. Using Simulations in a Capstone Course Deborah Searcy, Ph.D. Florida Atlantic University \| College of Business Incorporating simulations into a large, virtual capstone business administration course enables students to integrate the knowledge they have acquired across their coursework with practice working as a virtual team. In this integrative course, students explore a total organizational perspective, developing vital hands-on experience that helps them meet the challenges of managing a business in the real world.
