Public Outreach

Lead PI: Gabby Barbarite

The goal of this objective is to share the important research being conducted through the Florida Center for Coastal and Human Health with public audiences.

jh The Ocean Discovery Visitors Center is the public’s gateway to FAU Harbor Branch and features a variety of research-themed exhibits. As an outcome of this project, a display was created to educate the community about harmful algal blooms, impacts that these events have on Florida and the Indian River Lagoon, as well as the latest findings from our researchers. The display also features an interactive component that allows guests to dive deeper into these topics.

FAU Harbor Branch scientists and students also participate in FCCHH outreach efforts. Through platforms like our Ocean Science Lecture Series and Speakers Bureau program, researchers can share their most recent discoveries with the community. In addition, our outreach scientists have incorporated HAB-related concepts into interpretive messaging and hand-on activities for all ages. By sharing this information, our goal is to improve scientific literacy and environmental stewardship.

Training the Next Generation of Marine Scientists and Engineers

In addition to highly impactful science, we are committed to sharing our knowledge with a goal of inspiring, educating and training the next generation of professionals. Students at the collegiate and graduate levels can work directly with faculty members that are leaders in their fields and gain hands-on experience conducting cutting edge research. Florida Atlantic University (FAU) Harbor Branch is also home to a globally recognized internship program that has provided unrivaled marine science and ocean engineering experiences to college students for over 45 years. At the pre-collegiate level, our education team collaborates with local school districts to provide immersive experiences to students through an array of laboratory- and field-based programs. In 2007, FAU Harbor Branch was instrumental in founding the Marine and Oceanographic Academy, a magnet high school located on our campus, which serves as a model for partnering a marine research institute with a public-school system to improve the scientific literacy of high school students and their teachers.
