The WAC program guarantees that students get writing instruction across the University disciplines. Thus, students have increased opportunities to improve their writing throughout their undergraduate careers. In fact, faculty receive special WAC training to help students improve writing and critical thinking skills. This assessment is designed to measure the overall success of the program and make improvements to further support student success. While it is a requirement to participate in this assessment, it is also a unique opportunity that you have to give the university some valuable feedback.

Every semester, about 15-20 sections are randomly selected by the office of Institutional Effectiveness & Analysis to participate in the WAC assessment. If a faculty member in the resulting pool has had a section participate in the assessment in the last two years, any sections taught by that faculty member are eliminated from the pool. All students in selected sections are required to participate.

Near the start of the semester, you will receive an email from fau.wac.manager@gmail.com letting you know that one of your sections will be participating. Once the drop/add period is over, a second email will be sent to tell you which section has been selected to participate. Around midterm, you will get a message reminding you that your class will be participating. Student will not be notified by WAC about the assessment until after midterm. You will be copied on messages that are sent to your students. As students begin to complete the assessment, WAC will send you updates to notify you which students still need to do so.

Please contact the WAC Director, Sipai Klein, or the WAC Assistant Director, Julianne Zvolensky.

Faculty who have a section participate in the WAC assessment this term will not be asked to participate again for two years. However, faculty may choose to volunteer to participate more frequently.

The role of the IOR or lecturing faculty is simply to remind the GTA to follow up with students about completing the assessment. The WAC Director or Assistant Director may contact you separately to let you know that one of the GTAs you supervise will be participating in the assessment.

For more information, visit the Raters section of the WAC website or contact the WAC Director, Sipai Klein, or the WAC Assistant Director, Julianne Zvolensky.

Scores are reported as averages to each department that has WAC-designated courses. No individual student or faculty scores are reported.

Scores for specific faculty members are not reported to departments. All scores are reported as averages. WAC assessment results are not reported as part of faculty annual evaluations nor are they sent to the faculty’s college/department. However, individual faculty may request their own score report for their own personal use to inform their course planning.
