Uninsured Deposits to Total Deposits

Three of the largest four bank failures in U.S. history occurred during 2023 (Silicon Valley Bank, Signature Bank, and First Republic Bank) and were precipitated by the rapid withdrawals of uninsured deposits following the news of these banks' adverse risk exposures and weaknesses. With growing concerns about unrealized losses on investment securities and commercial real estate loans, the risk of yet another depositor run on one or more of these institutions grows each day.

Each U.S. bank with more than $1 billion in assets must report the dollar amount of uninsured deposits and the dollar amount of total deposits in quarterly filings with its regulators. Using regulatory data, we calculate each bank’s exposure to uninsured deposits as the dollar amount of uninsured deposits as a percentage of its total deposits.

Below is a screen showing banks with total assets greater than $10 billion. Banks reporting a ratio of uninsured deposits to total deposits greater than 50% are at an elevated risk of a run by uninsured depositors.

This quarterly ongoing project is part of the Banking Initiative at Florida Atlantic University, sponsored by Executive Education. These statistics are based upon Dr. Cole’s analysis of Bank Call Report data for Q4 2025 obtained from the U.S. Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council.
