Professor Carol McGuirk Awarded Emeritus Status
by Florida Atlantic University President Stacy Volnick

Congratulations to Carol McGuirk on being awarded Professor Emeritus status!

Carol McGuirk earned her B.A. in Visual Arts (Painting) and Literature from Bennington College in 1970; she earned an M.A. and Ph.D. in English and Comparative Literature from Columbia in 1971 and 1977 respectively.

She started at Florida Atlantic University in 1985 and was promoted to full professor 1990. While McGuirk has been teaching at FAU for the past 37 years, her teaching career spans an impressive 50 years.

McGuirk has contributed to scholarship in Scottish studies; 17th, 18th, and 19th century British literature; animal studies; literary and cultural theory; and science fiction studies. In addition to her teaching and scholarship, Carol has been a role model and generous colleague to those in her department and beyond.

When I nominated Carol for Emeritus Faculty status, I did so with a deep appreciation of her contributions to FAU English department over many years. In particular, our Science Fiction and Fantasy MA track, one of the most distinctive programs in our department, would not be what it is without her dedication, scholarship, and mentoring.
