David Simpson earned his PhD in Social Work at the Jane Addams College of Social Work at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) and his Master of Science in Social Administration from Case Western Reserve University. He taught at Pacific Lutheran University (PLU) between 2016 and 2022 and prior to that as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Additionally, he was an Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Social Work at the Institute for Juvenile Research and the Department of Psychiatry at UIC between 2011 and 2016. As a faculty member at PLU, he taught social work practice and research courses in the BSW program along with developing several special topics courses that focused on trauma informed care, mental health, and on the Rwandan genocide. Dr. Simpson was a long-standing committee member of the Holocaust and Genocide Studies program at PLU.

As a clinical social worker, he used Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy to treat individuals across the lifespan with anxiety disorders, including post-traumatic stress disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. While at UIC, Dr. Simpson was the Program Evaluator for the Urban Youth Trauma Center, a Treatment Services Adaptation Center within the National Child Traumatic Stress Network, where he continues his involvement with various research efforts.
