With the recent changes FAU and the state university system has initiated due to COVID-19, the Pre-Health Professions office immediately instituted changes to how they work with, advise, and support their students. In order to continue serving their students, they now offer their programming and workshops in a virtual environment.

ph virtual workshopThe Pre-Health office’s annual spring Pre-Health Fair was rescheduled and held as a virtual fair, which included over 350 participants, and was supported by 35 different medical schools, who were in attendance to showcase their schools to FAU students. The fair normally includes a week of activities and programming for students, which was condensed into a day of activities. One of the activities was a virtual student panel workshop that included newly accepted students and current medical students (M1 or M2). The panelists spoke of their experiences and provided advice to new students interested in pursuing that path. The attendees were able to ask questions about the application process, committee interviews, and what to expect as a first-year medical student. The workshop not only provided guidance for the upcoming application cycle but to new incoming medical students.

The office has also instituted virtual MCAT Workshops that included over 60 participants, Personal Statement Workshops that drew in over 50 students across two days, Post Baccalaureate “Career Changer” Workshops, and more.

Interim dean of the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science, Teresa Wilcox, Ph.D., says,“The college’s Pre-Health Professions team has quickly pivoted during this uncertain time in providing virtual workshops that continue to provide rich educational offerings to our students, preparing them to become extraordinary future physicians, scientists, and individuals. This is critical for students on a pre-health program track, and the Pre-Health Office’s approach to remote advising and support gives students those many opportunities they would find in-person.”

Upcoming virtual workshops include the Physician and Health Professionals Workshop that invites members of the community who are practicing medicine, such as physician assistants, dentists, pharmacists, physical therapists, podiatrists, and so on, to speak with students interested in pursuing a career in those respective fields.

Another virtual offering is an Interview Bootcamp, which is provided in partnership with the FAU Career Center. This program prepares students for the virtual Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) once the student receives a medical school interview.
