Transient

Transient Process

FAU Transient Students are students that are seeking a degree at FAU and would like to take courses at another Florida public institution on a temporary basis. Upon matriculation at FAU, undergraduate students are expected to take courses required for the degree in residence at FAU. Students may take courses elsewhere if certain conditions are met. To take courses elsewhere, students must obtain advisor approval in advance and follow the transient process.

Requirements & Policies

  • Students must complete PART 1 and PART 2 (FloridaShines) of the Transient Process.
  • Students must await final approval before registering for the course(s).
    • Although students may receive approval in PART 1, they may not receive approval in PART 2 if the course(s) are not in line with degree requirements and advisor recommendations
    • Courses taken without approval may not be accepted by FAU to meet University or major requirements
  • Courses taken at a two-year college will not count towards the nine-hour summer enrollment requirement.
  • It is the student's responsibility to request an official transcript be sent from the Transient Institution to FAU's Registrar Office after completion of the course

Incoming Transient Students

Students in good standing at another accredited collegiate institution can enroll at FAU as non-degree transient students to complete course work to transfer back to their current institution.

FAU does not evaluate work previously completed, and it is the student's responsibility to secure approvals required by their home institution. Transient students should be advised by their home institution to determine whether they have met the necessary prerequisites before enrolling in the FAU course. If you would like to request a course syllabus, you will need to contact the department in which the course is held to see if they are able to provide you with this documentation.

Non-degree transient enrollment is subject to the availability of faculty, space, and facilities.

How to Apply if you attend a Florida Institution:

  • You do not need to submit an application or fee through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.
  • Check with your home institution for proper transient procedures and approval.
  • Students at Florida State University System institutions can complete the form online by accessing www.FloridaShines.org.
  • Once FAU has approved you as an inbound transient student, you will be notified through www.FloridaShines.org electronically. Please read the comment section of your form for pertinent information from FAU.
  • When you have completed your FAU course(s) and grades have posted, you must order an Official Transcript through https://myfau.fau.edu/ to receive proper posting of your credits at your Home Institution.

How to Apply if you attend a Private/Out of State Institution:

  • Check with your home institution for proper transient procedures and approval.
  • You will need to apply to FAU as a non-degree seeking student through https://nondegree.fau.edu
  • When you have completed your FAU course(s) and grades have posted, you must order an Official Transcript through https://myfau.fau.edu/ to receive proper posting of your credits at your Home Institution.

For questions regarding your transient application, you should contact the Registrar's Office at 561.297.3050 and listen to the prompt for the appropriate extension.

NOTE: if you are currently a student at another institution and want to seek a degree at FAU, you are considered a Transfer Student, not a Transient Student. You will need to complete an application for admission with Undergraduate Admissions.

Transient Troubleshooting

PART 1 Support

FAU’s OIT help desk is available to assist with any issues students encounter when trying to submit a request in PART 1 of the transient process. If you are having trouble logging in, submitting a request, or are not seeing the semester or transient institution in PART 1, please contact the OIT Help Desk: https://helpdesk.fau.edu

NOTE: If you are trying to submit a request for the current semester after the PART 1 closing date, do not contact OIT. You will need to email fautransient@fau.edu to receive assistance with this request.

PART 2 Support

FAU’s Help Desk is only able to assist with PART 1 technical issues and does not have any access to Florida Shines. If you are having issues with PART 2 (Florida Shines) you will need to contact the Florida Shines Help Desk: https://www.flvc.org/help-center.

Frequently Asked Questions

There are five accepted justifications:
  • The course is not being offered at FAU in the semester needed
  • A residence is outside of the FAU commuting area in the semester needed (Typically only accepted for summer terms)
  • Retaking a course that was failed at the transient institution (for grade forgiveness at the transient institution)
  • The course was part of a sequence of courses started at the transient institution prior to transfer
  • The course is required in order to complete the AA degree at a requested institution

Prior to submitting a request, we recommend making an appointment to speak to your academic advisor to determine if taking courses at another institution is appropriate in the semester needed.

Unfortunately, this is not an acceptable justification to take courses at another institution. If you have financial concerns, please speak to the financial aid office.

Yes, but this process is different than requesting to take courses at a Florida Public Institution. Please speak with your academic advisor if you want to take courses out-of-state or at a private institution.

Please contact the financial aid office for this information. You may also be able to find more information on the Financial Aid website: https://www.fau.edu/finaid/getting-started/special-programs.php

No, but there are some requirements FAU students should be aware of:
  • The last 30 upper-division credits must be taken at FAU
  • 75% of upper-division courses in the major must be taken at FAU
  • If the transient term is the first term of the student’s admission, the student must also be registered for courses at FAU
  • Students must be in good standing at FAU and eligible to register for classes in the transient term

Please log back into Part 1 to view the reason for the denial. Typically, Part 1 is denied due to not meeting one of the required justifications.

Please check the comments in the email you received. The transient administrators inform students here as there are many reasons why your request may have been denied.

Typically, requests take about 3-5 business days to be processed. During high volume times, requests could take up to 7-10 business days.

Requests are processed in the order in which they are received. With the high number of requests, there is no way to expedite this process.

Once your request is approved in Part 1, you can submit your Part 2 request.

The best way to reach a transient administrator is by emailing: fautransient@fau.edu. Your academic advisor may also be a good point of contact for transient questions.

FAU’s transient administrators are dispersed throughout FAU colleges and campuses, so there is no direct contact number. The best way to reach any transient administrator is by emailing: fautransient@fau.edu.

Please contact the FloridaShines help desk for assistance. https://www.flvc.org/help-center

Please contact the transient administrators at fautransient@fau.edu for steps on how to move forward with this request.

All institutions have their own processes when it comes to being a transient student. We recommend speaking to an academic advisor at your current institution about taking courses elsewhere.

Since transient students are non-degree seeking students at FAU, their registration typically opens the week before the semester begins. Please view our transient schedule to see specific registration dates.

Depending on the error, you may have specific actions you need to take in order to get registered for the course. We recommend contacting FAU’s registrar office for assistance.

FAU's registrar's office is the best point of contact for students that have been admitted to FAU as transient students.

Yes. You will need to apply to FAU as a non-degree-seeking student. Please see our "Incoming Transient Students" page for more information.
