FAU Scientist Featured in NatGeo’s ‘SharkFest’ 2023

Florida Atlantic University’s Stephen Kajiura, Ph.D., a professor of biological sciences in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science, is featured in National Geographic’s highly popular series, “When Sharks Attack.”

Combining expert sleuthing, reenactments and testimonials, Kajiura appeared in the premiere of the six-episode “When Sharks Attack 360, ” and eight-episode “When Sharks Attack…and Why.” When Sharks Attack 360 includes incredible visual effects where sharks swim right up to Kajiura in the cutting-edge VFX shark lab.

SharkFest 2023, a four-week long event, kicked off July 2 at 8 p.m. on National Geographic and streaming on HULU and Disney”+. A SharkFest collection page also is available on the Nat Geo TV App and ABC App with episodes from previous years of SharkFest including some that also feature Kajiura and other FAU scientists.

New shows and episodes for 2023 with FAU’s Kajiura include: 

  • When Sharks Attack 360 (six-episode series): An international team of experts hunts for clues as they investigate why sharks bite humans. They unravel the surprising threads that link these incidents. As the evidence mounts, they analyze data in a cutting-edge VFX shark lab to understand in forensic detail why sharks attack. National Geographic premiered July 3 at 8/7c, with new episodes each night through July 11; Nat Geo WILD – July 30 at 6/5c; Disney+ and HULU – premiered July 2.
  • When Sharks Attack… and Why (eight-episode series): From America’s coastlines to exotic beaches around the world, shark attacks are becoming more unpredictable. Many of these attacks occur suddenly, in large numbers and in unexpected locations – puzzling locals and scientists alike. Experts investigate these mysterious incidents to discover what is affecting some of nature’s most feared fish. National Geographic – premiered July 6 at 9/8c, with new episodes each night through July 12; Nat Geo WILD – July 26 at 8/7c and 9/8c; Disney+ and HULU – premiered July 2.
