The Florida Department of Education recently awarded Florida Atlantic University’s Center for Holocaust and Human Rights Education (CHHRE) $100,000 to serve as the administrator of the Commissioner’s Task Force on Holocaust Education. The Center is one of the only designated task force sites with ongoing services within the State University System of Florida.

The CHHRE serves all schools in Broward, Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River, Glades and Okeechobee counties by providing training and resources to teachers involved in Holocaust and genocide education. The CHHRE is an integral unit of FAU’s Peace, Justice and Human Rights Initiative.

“This award is further proof of the commitment of FAU to promoting issues of tolerance, equality and fundamental human rights,” said Steven Roper, Ph.D., executive director of the Peace, Justice and Human Rights Initiative.

The goal of the CHHRE is to educate students about the Holocaust so they can apply their knowledge and analytical skills to the events of past and present genocides.
