FAU to Host Events in Honor of Black History Month

Florida Atlantic University will celebrate Black History Month with a series of events throughout the month of February at its Boca Raton, Jupiter, and Davie campuses.

Florida Atlantic University will celebrate Black History Month with a series of events throughout the month of February at its Boca Raton, Jupiter, and Davie campuses. The events are sponsored or co-sponsored by the Division of Student Affairs. All events only are open to FAU students, faculty, and staff.

The following events will take place at FAU’s Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road:

Black History Month Kick-Off

Wednesday, Feb. 3, from noon to 2 p.m.

Traditions Plaza

The opening ceremony invites the FAU community to come together to explore the contributions of African Americans throughout history.

Movie: ‘42’

Wednesday, Feb. 3, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Innovation Village North Multi-Purpose Room

“42” is a film about Jackie Robinson, and captures the role that race played in professional sports.

Real Talk: What Are You?

Tuesday, Feb. 9, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Parliament Hall Multi-Purpose Room

Students will examine the role that racial identity plays in forming their thoughts and interactions with others.

Move: ‘Blackbird’

Wednesday, Feb. 10, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Parliament Hall Multi-Purpose Room

“Blackbird” is a movie that explores the challenges faced when race and sexual orientation intersect.

Riding in Cars with Black People featuring Chad Goller-Sojourner

Tuesday, Feb. 16, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Grand Palm Room, Student Union           

This discussion takes a humorous look at race and relations in America.

Seminar: Meaningful Conversations About Race

Wednesday, Feb. 17, from noon to 2 p.m.

Palmetto Palm Room, Student Union

This seminar will be facilitated by the star of “Riding in Cars with Black People,” and explores how to engage in meaningful dialogue about race.

Movie: ‘War Room’

Wednesday, Feb. 17, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Indian River Towers Multi-Purpose Room

“War Room” is a movie that looks at the intersectionality of race and religion.

Lunch & Learn: Kaleidoscope

Thursday, Feb. 18, from noon to 2 p.m.

Indian River Towers Multi-Purpose Room

Enjoy lunch and talk about the influence of intersectionality on identity.

Finale: Afro-Latino Cultural Celebration

Wednesday, Feb. 24 at 6 p.m.

Grand Palm Room & Outdoor Stage

The finale is a celebration of African Americans and Latinos in America, featuring dancing and food.

Tuesday, Feb. 2, from 4 to 6 p.m.

“Paris is Burning” is a film that discusses the LGBTQA drag scene in New York City, predominantly impacted by the African American and Latino community.

College Brides Walk

Friday, Feb. 12, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Barry University,  11300 NE Second Ave., Miami

This annual walk, in collaboration with Barry University, Johnston & Wales and Florida International University, commemorates the importance of taking a stand against domestic violence.

Natural Hair Care

Wednesday, Feb. 17, from noon to 2 p.m.

Oasis Lounge

This is an exhibition on the maintenance of hair care with demonstrations included.
