Department of Surgery

Message from the Chair

The Department of Surgery is committed to transforming healthcare in South Florida and beyond by educating exceptional surgeons, promoting the health of our communities, and developing the next generation of surgical leaders. Our foremost goal is to train highly qualified surgeons who possess the clinical judgment, technical expertise, professionalism, and leadership skills necessary to deliver evidence-based, patient-centered, high-quality, and cost-effective care across the full spectrum of surgical disease.

To achieve this mission, we have developed a comprehensive residency program that places education above service while fostering academic excellence, innovation, and scholarly inquiry. Our curriculum emphasizes progressive operative responsibility and autonomy, critical thinking, multidisciplinary collaboration, and lifelong learning, while providing residents with opportunities to participate in basic, clinical, translational, and outcomes research that contribute to advancing the science of surgery. Through these experiences, we prepare our graduates not only to become outstanding clinicians but also to serve as educators, investigators, and future leaders in academic and community surgery.

Our carefully selected network of academic and community-based teaching hospitals reflects the College of Medicine's commitment to meeting the growing healthcare needs of South Florida through innovative education and high-quality clinical care. Residents gain extensive exposure to every major surgical subspecialty while caring for a varied patient population under the mentorship of nationally recognized faculty. This broad clinical experience provides the foundation necessary to excel in either academic medicine or community practice.

We are dedicated to promoting the health and well-being of our communities by developing surgeons who embrace compassion, professionalism, integrity, and service. We actively encourage collaboration with healthcare partners, engagement in quality improvement initiatives, and participation in community outreach efforts that strengthen the regional healthcare workforce and improve patient outcomes.

By integrating exceptional surgical education, impactful research, innovative clinical training, and meaningful community engagement, the FAU Department of Surgery embodies the mission of the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine. We are committed to preparing graduates who will transform the future of surgery through excellence in patient care, scientific discovery, education, and leadership.
