Spring 2019 Lecture Series at the Broward Center of Performing Arts
FAU’s Lifelong Learning program for adult learners was established on the Boca Raton campus of Florida Atlantic University in 1980. With more than 25,000 patron registrations per year, the program in Boca Raton is a national model of exemplary lifelong learning. We now plan to expand our offering to Broward County by launching the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Florida Atlantic University, Ft. Lauderdale in Spring 2019, with an exciting lecture series held at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. Join us for the kick off of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute’s new location in Broward partnering with Broward Center of Performing Arts + Light refreshments & conversation after each event.

Music is my Time Machine: A Celebration of memorable Cinematic, Broadway and Popular Themes!
Dr. Courtney Jones
Assistant Professor of Trumpet & Artistic Director of Jazz, FAU
Description: With the help of Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, John Williams, and more, Jones presents an innovative approach to performance practice while exploring visual aesthetics and theatrics to enhance the solo concert. His performances have been described as “…a silk-thread that weaves through the music to create a perfect evening of entertainment.”
Bio: The newest directions in modern-day trumpet performance are being explored and defined by Courtney D. Jones, D.M.A., an award-winning performing and recording artist who has also emerged as a leading figure in contemporary performance and pedagogy, conducting and service to inner-city youth through music outreach programs. As a lecturer, he has addressed topics ranging from “The Harlem Renaissance: An Influence on Western Music and Its Impact on American Culture,” to “Broadening the technical Capabilities of 21st tcentury performers.” Jones is presently assistant professor of trumpet and artistic director of jazz and chamber ensembles at FAU. In addition to his performance and teaching career, he has worked within the film and television industry, performed classical music with numerous orchestras, and has shared the stage with B.B. King, Kenney Burrell, Dee-Dee Bridgewater, Lalo Schifrin and Stevie Wonder.

Description: South Florida has been identified by the world's leading scientists as highly vulnerable to rising sea level as the result of the changing climate. What can we do about it? The simple answer is either adapt or get out of Dodge. Architects and engineers can devise solutions for our buildings and infrastructure, however the problem is much more comprehensive and requires heavy lifting by policy makers and decision makers before the financial markets and insurance industry force our hand.
Bio: Anthony Abbate is associate provost at FAU and graduate professor and director of the School of Architecture. His research examines historical and contemporary design and construction practices in the hot-humid climate zones of the tropics and subtropics. His writings include “Subtropical Sustainable: A Context Sensitive Design Approach to Redevelopment in Broward County,” and a chapter in “Miami Modern Metropolis: Mid-century Architecture and Urbanism in the Tropics,” edited by Allan Shulman. Abbate has presented at conferences in Australia, Colombia, Germany, Mexico and the across the United States. With a long record of community service and leadership, he currently serves on the board of directors of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance and is a member of Leadership Florida. Abbate is a native of Fort Lauderdale and has travelled to more than 45 countries from the Arctic to the Antarctic and participates in the Strategic Council of the Florida Association of the American Institute of Architects, the Climate Reality Project as well as the SE Florida Regional Climate Compact.
Bio: Colin Polsky is an environmental social scientist whose research and teaching examine how people create, perceive and respond to environmental challenges. As director of the Florida Center for Environmental Studies at FAU, he helps build and lead teams to advance knowledge of U.S. climate vulnerabilities. The vision of CES is to improve Florida's sustainability through research, education and outreach on wetlands ecology and coastal resilience. Polsky is trained as a geographer, specializing in the Human Dimensions of Global Environmental Change. His background in mathematics, humanities, French, geography, and science & international affairs (from U. Texas, Penn State, and Harvard, respectively) has led to a sustained interest in advancing knowledge of U.S. climate vulnerabilities, in both methodological and applied terms. Polsky has delivered close to 100 public presentations in eight countries and served as co-convening lead author for a chapter in the 2013 National Climate Assessment.

The State of American Foreign Policy
Jeffrey Morton
Ph.D., Professor of Political Science & Foreign Policy Association Fellow, FAU
Description: In this special one-time lecture, Jeffrey Morton will provide an assessment of the current state of American foreign policy at the onset of President Trump’s third year in office. Key issues for consideration include North Korea, Russia, China, the evolving U.S. policy towards the Middle East and America’s relations with key allies.
Bio: Jeffrey S. Morton is professor of World Politics at FAU and a Fellow at the Foreign Policy Association. Morton received his master’s degree from Rutgers University, specializing in war studies, and his Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina, specializing in international law with a concentration in U.S. foreign policy. He is the author of three books, numerous journal articles and book chapters, and has published on issues ranging from the legality of interventions and weapons of war to the United Nations, Israeli security and U.S. foreign policy. Morton has lectured nationally on matters relating to U.S. foreign policy, has contributed to articles in the New York Times and Wall Street Journal and delivers the annual Great Decisions lecture series to a live audience of 3,000. Morton is the recipient of the FAU Researcher of the Year Award, Talon Service Award, College Teacher of the Year and Master Teacher designation. In 2012, Morton was awarded the prestigious Foreign Policy Association Medal, an honor bestowed on leading members of the U.S. foreign policy establishment.
