Postdoc Travel Grant Competition

Deadline is Oct. 4

Purpose: To provide the postdoctoral fellow with the opportunity to present their research in a national community of researchers and network within that group.

Related Grant Opportunity: The 2021 Postdoc Travel Grant Competition provides postdocs with an opportunity to sharpen their professional skills, reignite their passion for discovery, promote preeminent research and foster community. The Postdoc Travel Grants are funded by the Division of Research and consists of $1,000 toward allowable travel expenses, typically registration or domestic travel, to attend a national conference. The fellow is required to present their research orally or as a poster, serving as a representative of FAU. Five (5) awards will be granted and funds will be available for us starting Jan. 1, 2022 and will need to be expended in Workday by Dec. 31, 2022.

Eligibility: Any individual with the title of “postdoctoral fellow” or “senior research fellow” is eligible for this award. The postdoc is required to be employed by FAU at the time of travel. All winners must be in attendance at the Postdoc Retreat at Harbor Branch on Oct. 29, 2021.

Award Types:

  • (4) $1,000 Video Submissions Winners
  • (1) $1,000 People’s Choice Winner for an In-Person Oral Presentation at Oct. 29 Postdoc Retreat (must be present to win)

All five winners will be announced at the Postdoc Retreat at FAU Harbor Branch on Oct. 29, 2021.

To Apply: Submission deadline is Monday, Oct. 4, since judges will need adequate time to review all videos and submit scores. Applicants will submit Zoom video recording of the postdoc presenting one static PowerPoint slide, and no other resources or props, similar to the 3MT presentation style. The video can be up to two minutes in length and cannot include transitions or animations. For tips on recording zoom presentations, click here.

Upload the final zoom video (in MP4 format) along with the FAU Photo/Video Media Release Form to the submission portal here.

The video should contain these fundamental components:

  • Introduction: Postdoc name, supervisor’s name, research interest areas
  • What is your specific research problem and the methods you use?
  • What are your findings?
  • Why should society care about your research?
  • What are the potential impacts surrounding your research problem/findings?
  • Why is your research unique?

Video Judging: Judges will consist of select members of the FAU Postdoctoral Advisory Board, and asked to base their opinions on your video submission, using on the following criteria:

  • Significance of the research problem
  • Research design
  • Impact
  • Innovation
  • Perceived benefit of a travel award if awarded to the applicant

To Participate in the People's Choice: Attend the Oct. 29, 2021 Postdoc Retreat and orally present the same fundamental components listed for the video submission but with no visual aid. The audience will vote after all presentations conclude and scores tallied. In the event of a tie, a neutral member of Research Leadership will decide the winner based on the judging criteria above.

It is important to protect your idea, especially if you are presenting outside of FAU at conferences or symposiums.
