Florida Atlantic University High School’s girls track and field team won the 4x800 state title for the first time in the school’s 15-year history. Maisa Atkinson received FAU High’s first-ever individual state title by winning the 400-meter run.

A total of 62 students represented FAU High while competing throughout the season. The top four in each event moved on from districts to regionals in which the top four from regionals qualified for states.

FAU High’s boys and girls track and field team and the girls track and field team were both named district and regional champions.

“I am so proud,” said Christopher Childs, track and field head coach at FAU High. “From the first day of the season, I asked them to be dedicated and to put in work when at practice, as we started to compete and compare their times with other schools, they began to make a name for themselves. At first, our goal was to be successful at districts, then regionals and finally to make a statement at the state meet – that is exactly what they did.”

Childs was recently named “Palm Beach County Preps Coach of the Year” after the historic season at FAU High.

“Receiving this distinction is a tremendous honor, not just for me but for our entire athletic program, said Childs. “We’ve all worked so hard all season long, and it feels great to receive this recognition.”

Four students from the girls track and field team will now compete in the 2019 New Balance Nationals Outdoor Competition in June in Greensboro, N.C.
