Florida Atlantic University recently was recognized for its efforts to provide academic advising to students in on-campus parking garages. FAU’s University Advising Services (UAS) received the “Most Innovative Programming Award” at the 2017 Florida Academic Advising Association (FLACADA) annual conference, hosted by Florida A & M University.

“Get Wise: Advising on the Go” was launched in spring 2015 in an effort to target commuter students and working students who take evening classes when FAU offices are closed. About 83 percent of the 21,000 students on the Boca Raton campus are commuters. Academic advisers are stationed in Garages 1 and 2 between 5 and 7 p.m. to talk with students, answer questions and to partner them with their assigned academic advisors. In fall 2016, advisers spoke with nearly 400 students in the parking garages.

“This program is truly an example of meeting students where they are,” said Angel Nevin, assistant director of UAS. “By connecting students to an academic adviser, we are encouraging and fostering student involvement and engagement, which has been shown to increase retention.”
