Homecoming is right around the corner and this year promises to be better than ever. The Homecoming Committee invites each and every FAU department to participate in the annual Homecoming Office Decorating Contest. This year's theme is "OWL PROWL." The Green Market@FAU is open every Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the FAU Stadium Plaza on the Boca Raton campus. Be aware that only currently enrolled students and active faculty and staff will receive the test email, text and telephone call-out message.

IMPORTANT: Faculty and staff members should give their own individual extensions rather than the main office number. The only exception is for secretaries and receptionists who routinely answer the main number. Using your own extension will prevent multiple calls from going to the main number.

During the test, please note:
- For text message alerts to your phone, you will see "Code = 630-79 or 231-77" as the sender of the incoming alert message. Please save this number and program it as FAU so that you can quickly recognize this number as the official source of FAU’s messages.
- For voice alerts, the caller ID will show 888-832-8695. When you answer the call and say "Hello," you will hear the recorded message. As above, add this number to your contacts under "FAU" as well.
- Email alerts will now come from faualert@fau.edu. As above, add this address to your contacts under “FAU” as well.
- When the outdoor warning sirens are activated on the Boca Raton, Harbor Branch and Jupiter campuses, a loud siren sound and a spoken message will be heard across each campus, as well as in nearby neighborhoods and business areas.

All layers of the FAU Alert system will be tested; however, in an actual emergency, depending on the situation, the appropriate systems will be used, i.e., email, text messaging, web announcements and siren/PA alerts.

On Thursday, Oct. 18, FAU's University Center for Excellence in Writing (UCEW) will celebrate the fourth annual National Day on Writing. ESSAY CONTEST:
Your Vote, Your Voice 2012, an organization dedicated to voter registration, education and participation on college campuses across the country, brings attention to the fact that in the 2012 Presidential election higher education is a centerpiece of both the Democratic and Republican campaigns. Entrants must write an essay identifying the principle issue(s) that most need to be addressed by the 2012 presidential candidates. Three graduate finalists and three undergraduate finalists will be selected. The top winner from each category will receive a $50 prize disbursed to students' Financial Aid account. The Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) program, will be offering two training seminars for faculty who are teaching WAC courses this academic year. Space is still available for the second two-day, two-and-a-half hour training is intended for faculty who have not yet participated in a WAC seminar and are teaching, or plan to teach, WAC courses this academic year, and those who are planning or teaching courses in FAU's University Scholars Program. The workshop will be held on the Boca Raton campus in GCS 214B (video conferencing is available) on:

- Wednesday, Oct. 10 and Wednesday, Oct. 17 from 2 to 4:30 p.m.

As you may know, FAU formalized its Writing Across Curriculum program in spring 2007. At that time, the Faculty Senate approved a policy that beginning spring 2008, all faculty (including adjuncts and instructors) who teach WAC designated courses "may do so without training, but only for a single semester." Those faculty members must participate in a WAC seminar before teaching another WAC course. If you have not had WAC training at FAU and you are teaching a WAC course this term and intend to teach one again, you must attend one of our 2-day workshops.

After attending the five hours of WAC training, tenure line faculty will receive a $400 stipend. Likewise, instructors will receive a $125 stipend and adjuncts will receive a $100 stipend. All attendees, including graduate assistants, will receive a certificate upon completion of the 2-day seminar.

As we will only be able to accommodate 15 participants in each seminar, we encourage you to register as early as possible. In response to both faculty and staff requests for online resources in responding to at risk students, the Provost's Office and Student Affairs worked in collaboration with Kognito Interactive, Inc., to implement an online, interactive 45-minute training module for faculty and staff to learn about the common indicators of student distress, disruptive behaviors and how to best approach at-risk students for referral to the appropriate offices.

In addition, a training module for working with student veterans has also been implemented. These interactive websites can be accessed through MyFAU (under both the faculty and staff tabs). This semester the Weppner Center for Civic Engagement and Service will be hosting workshops on Academic Service Learning (A S-L) on the Boca Raton, Davie and Jupiter campuses. As part of Safety Month at FAU, the department of Environmental Health and Safety is sponsoring a Safety Video contest. Some common phishing scam emails include:
- Emails informing the recipient they have won an "Olympic lottery" for which they have not entered.
- Emails saying that you're "Mail Quota" is exceeded or about to be reached and to click on a link in the email for more space.
- Emails informing recipients that they have a package from FedEx, UPS, etc. that they are not expecting and to click on the link or attachment.

Finally, watch out for suspicious websites. Please make sure that the website URL begins with "https://" or "shttp://". Also look for the padlock symbol in the browser window. Do not enter any personal, credit card or banking information on sites that don't contain the "https://" or "shttp://". Finally keep your web browser up to date with the latest release, which will include the latest security patches. "Be Cyber Wiser: Stay Smart and Safe Online." Faculty are invited to participate in one of seven new Faculty Learning Communities (FLCs) that will commence in fall 2012 through spring 2013. FLCs typically consist of 6-12 faculty members from multiple departments/colleges who meet on a regular basis throughout the academic year to learn and share ideas on a topic of mutual interest relating to teaching pedagogy and student learning. The Arthur and Mata Jaffe Center for Book Arts at FAU will offer a workshop titled Exploring Copier Art with Ginny Lloyd, an award-winning photographer and former professor of computer graphics, on Saturday, Sept. 22, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., in the center's book studio at the Wimberly Library. Lloyd is one of the pioneers of the copier art movement. She will show works created on copiers and explain how they were created, and will demonstrate such techniques as flashing, copy motion, overprinting, degeneration, direct image and still life collage. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters presents the lecture "Paramilitarism and the Assault on Democracy in Haiti" on Thursday, Sept. 27, at 2 p.m. in the Performing Arts Building, room 101, Boca Raton campus. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will be presented by Jeb Sprague, a sociologist/author from the University of California at Santa Barbara. In his book by the same name, Sprague investigates the dangerous world of right-wing paramilitarism in Haiti and its role in undermining the democratic aspirations of the Haitian people. Sprague focuses on the period beginning in 1990 with the rise of Haiti's first democratically elected president, Jean-Bertrand Aristide, and the right-wing movements that succeeded in driving him from power. Sprague received a Project Censored Award in 2008 for an article coauthored with Haitian journalist Wadner Pierre from Port-au-Prince, and has written for many publications including the Inter Press Service, TeleSUR, Al Jazeera, Z Magazine, NACLA, Haiti Liberte, and Haiti Progres.

Rachel Manley wil offer a lecture, "Jamaican Independence Fifty Years Later" at 3 p.m. on Oct 10, in the Board of Trustees Room in the Administration Bldg. on the Boca Raton campus. Rachel Manley, as a member of Jamaica's most famous political family, provides a unique inside perspective on decolonization and independence. Her grandfather was leader of Jamaica's first political party and served as the island's Chief Minister during the years leading up to independence. Her grandmother was an accomplished sculptor and founder of the Jamaica School of Art. Her father was perhaps Jamaica's most charismatic and controversial Prime Minister. Rachel Manley's poetry has won the Jamaica Centennial Medal, and her memoir about her family won the Governor General's Literary Award, one of Canada's most prestigious literary prizes. Costa has chosen this place because the budget of the film is tight and here he can hire supernumeraries, local actors and extras on the cheap. Things go more or less smoothly until a conflict erupts over the privatization of the water supply. The trouble is that one of the local actors, is a leading activist in the protest movement.

"The Muslims Are Coming: Racism and the Politics of Empire" -- a public talk by Deepa Kumar, Ph.D., will be held on Thursday, Oct. 18, at 7 p.m. in the Administration Building, Board of Trustees Room (ADM 305). "Islamophobia" became an especially familiar term in the United States following the September 11 attacks. It has been used as much by the left to combat anti-Muslim sentiment or efforts as on the right to attack Muslim-Americans and deny the very existence of what can be identified as Islamophobia.

In an important new book, "Islamophobia and the Politics of Empire" (Haymarket Books, 2012), Deepa Kumar argues that Islamophobia has a long history. In fact, creating anti-Muslim fervor was vital to European and American projects of empire building. "This book is about the image of 'Islam,' that mythical creation conjured out of the needs of empire that has led even progressives to claim that Muslims are more violent than any other religious group," Kumar writes in the introduction. Dr. Kumar is an associate professor of media studies and Middle East studies at Rutgers University.

The Hertz Foundation Scholarship is for senior or graduate students for graduate work in the physical sciences and has a deadline of November 2.

The Soros is for New American seniors or graduate students for up to 2 years of graduate study with a deadline of November 1. These scholarships do not require FAU nomination.

The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship is for exceptional college students who intend to pursue careers in science, mathematics, or engineering. Students intending to study medicine are eligible only if they plan a research career rather than a career as a medical doctor in private practice. Applicants must be a full-time matriculated sophomore or junior with a GPA of at least a B, and a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. For the 2010-2011 academic year, winners had an average GPA of 3.95. FAU internal deadline is December 15.

The Truman Scholarship is a $30,000 merit based grant awarded to outstanding undergraduate juniors who wish financial support to attend graduate or professional school in preparation for careers in government, the non-profit sector or elsewhere in public service. FAU internal deadline is January 5.

The Morris Udall is for sophomores or juniors interested in environmental studies; or Native American/Alaskan sophomores or juniors. The FAU internal deadline is January 31.

The NSEP/Boren is for undergrads to study abroad and work in national security. The FAU internal deadline is January 13.

The James Madison is for seniors or recent graduates for graduate study to teach in history or political science and has a deadline of March 1. The Madison does not require FAU nomination.

The Jaffe Book Arts Gallery in the Wimberly Library on the Boca Raton campus presents "River of Grass." The exhibition is an homage to Marjory Stoneman Douglas and her seminal book, "The Everglades: River of Grass," and a record of Dorothy Simpson Krause's time here at the Jaffe Center for Book Arts last spring as JCBA's inaugural Helen M. Salzberg Artist in Residence. The Everglades is one of America's most unusual rivers, 40 miles wide and over 100 miles long, slow moving and ranging from a few inches to a few feet in depth. Only half its original size, the Everglades has been largely destroyed to meet the demands of urban and agricultural growth. To capture the grandeur of this unique region, Krause combined photography, painting and printmaking techniques on surfaces as diverse as aluminum and fresco. The resulting images focus on the beauty of this rare ecosystem in its pristine reflectivity and, in the eroded surfaces, its fragility.

"Student Body Art," a photography exhibition of students and their tattoos by visual artist Z. Koppisch, will be on display at the John D. MacArthur Campus Library Gallery. The photos are from "Stories on the Skin: Tattoo Culture at FAU," a long-term creative collaboration between the Arthur and Mata Jaffe Center for Book Arts at FAU's Wimberly Library and Karen Leader, Ph.D., of FAU's Department of Visual Arts and Art History. Koppisch, an FAU alumna, is a photographer and senior designer at the Wimberly Library. Students from the Jupiter campus are invited to add their ink to the archive by being photographed and/or videotaped at the reception. FAU's University Galleries in the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters present the "New Art: South Florida Cultural Consortium Visual and Media Artists Fellowship" exhibition from Saturday, Sept. 22 through Saturday, Dec. 15. The exhibition will be presented in both the Schmidt Center Gallery and the Ritter Art Gallery on the Boca Raton campus,. There will be an opening reception with music and a cash bar on Saturday, September 22 from 6 to 9 p.m. The Miami-based band Gold Dust Lounge will provide music during the second half of the event at the Ritter Art Gallery.

The exhibition presents 11 artists from Florida's five southeastern counties who have won a highly competitive and generous annual grant awarded by the South Florida Cultural Consortium. This year's South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship winners are Nellie Appleby (Monroe County), Domingo Castillo (Miami Dade), Clifton Childree (Miami Dade), Jiae Hwang (Miami Dade), Nicolas Lobo (Miami Dade), Ernesto Oroza (Miami Dade), Tom Scicluna (Miami Dade), Eric Landes (Broward County), Mark Moormann (Broward County), John Sanchez (Broward County) and Phillip Estlund (Palm Beach County). The artists are selected through a two-step judging process by first a regional panel and then a national panel of visual arts professionals. Over 300 artists apply each year, in part because the grant award for each artist of either $15,000 or $7,500 is among the nation's highest for individual artists.

Clinical Research Studies at FAU's College of Medicine is conducting a clinical research trial to evaluate the effectiveness of an investigational medication for mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease. The Language Development Lab, under the direction of Professor Erika Hoff, is conducting a federally funded study of early monolingual and bilingual development. We are looking for 24- to 30-month-old children who are learning Spanish at home and at least one parent was born in a Spanish-speaking country. For participating, you will receive $150 in gift cards and your child will get a gift and a t-shirt. With your permission, we will contact you again every 6 months until your child is 5 years old. We will pay for your time at each visit. If you complete this study through the age of 5 years, you will receive a total of $1,000 in gift cards.

We are also looking for 24- to 30-month-old children who are learning only English at home. For participating, you will receive $50 in gift cards and your child will get a gift and a t-shirt. With your permission, we will contact you again every 6 months until your child is 5 years old. We will pay you for your time at each visit. If you complete the study through the age of 5 years you will receive a total of $400 in gift cards. We plan to study children's language development from 2 years and 6 months to 5 years.

The purpose of these studies is to gain a better understanding of how language develops during this period. We will come to your home or you can come to our playroom on the Davie campus of Florida Atlantic University or to our office on the Boca Raton campus -- whichever is easier for you. The Communication Disorders Clinic is located on the 4th floor of the College of Education building on the Boca Raton campus and provides speech, language and hearing diagnostic and therapy services -- including accent reduction therapy -- to children and adults. Services are available Monday through Friday during every semester on a space-available basis. Appointments for diagnostic or treatment services may be made by calling Maria at 561-297-2258. Payment can now be made by VISA or MasterCard.

The clinic offers Stroke Support and a Stuttering Support groups, each meeting once a month. Interested parties should contact the clinic for details. FAU faculty and staff members and their families receive a 50 percent discount for all services. Full-time FAU students receive a 50 percent discount for evaluations and then are charged $10 per treatment session.
