A "50 on the 50" black-tie gala will be held on on Saturday, Oct. 29, at 6:30 p.m. in the tower of the new, 30,000-seat Football Stadium on the Boca Raton campus. Highlights of the gala include a "half-time" show on the field; a silent auction featuring rounds of golf, tickets to local attractions, computers, gift cards and more; and opportunities to see FAU's 50th Anniversary Book brought to life through a video presentation. While providing an opportunity for the University's friends and supporters to join in the celebration, the gala also serves as a fundraiser for the President's Scholarship Challenge, which has raised more than $200,000 so far, and 61 students have been awarded scholarships this year. From the University's Environmental Health and Safety and Student Health Services departments: County health departments across South Florida continue to monitor mosquito-borne illnesses. The Palm Beach County Health Department has issued a mosquito-borne disease advisory as two cases of dengue fever have been confirmed in Palm Beach County. Classic dengue fever is characterized by acute onset of high fever, severe headache, muscle and bone aches, rash, severe pain behind the eyes and mild bleeding from the nose or gums. Persons experiencing symptoms should see their medical provider or if severe visit the nearest hospital or clinic.

Take these precautions to protect yourself and your family against mosquito-borne illnesses:
- Avoid outdoor activities when mosquitoes are most active (normally at dawn or dusk).
- Dress in clothing that covers the skin (long pants and long sleeves).
- Use DEET (with concentrations up to 30%) or other repellents containing picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus when the potential exists for exposure to mosquitoes. It is NOT recommended to use DEET on children less than two months of age. Instead, infants should be kept indoors or mosquito netting used over carriers. Always read the manufacturer’s directions carefully before applying repellent.
- Make sure your windows remain closed or are sealed completely by screens; keep screens in good repair.
- Get rid of mosquitoes around your home: DRAIN all standing water (even the smallest of containers that can collect water could become a breeding ground for hundreds to thousands of mosquitoes). Keep pools clean and chlorinated.
- The Florida Department of Health is also recommending that people take precautions to avoid mosquito bites when traveling across the state, since other Florida counties are under mosquito advisories or alerts.

Parking and Transportation Services would like to remind the FAU community that the 5th Annual Homecoming Parade will take place on Friday, Nov. 4 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. on the Boca Raton campus. The parade will necessitate some traffic blockages starting at 4:15 p.m. The staging area for the parade will be in Lot 5 near Palm Beach State College on the north side of campus. The parade will proceed on North University Drive moving onto West University Drive. The parade will then travel east on Volusia Street and then south on Dade Avenue.

To accommodate the parade, the following parking lots will be temporarily inaccessible: Parking Garage 1, Lot 19 and Lot 20. The following intersections will be closed for the duration of the parade: Brevard Court and Indian River Street; Palm Beach Avenue and Indian River Street; and West University Drive and Indian River Street. Volusia Street and Dade Avenue will be closed for the duration of the parade. Dade Avenue will remain closed until about 7:45 p.m. North University Drive eastbound and West University Drive northbound will be one-way only during the parade.

In order to support faculty and increase access to and enrollment in eLearning, the Center for eLearning requests faculty proposals for eLearning course development & delivery. Faculty selected in this process will receive a stipend of $3,000 to:
- Complete a training program and develop an online course during the spring of 2012.
- Teach the newly developed course as an overload at least once by the end of Spring 2013. The overload instruction rate will be $6,000 for full-time faculty and $4,500 for part-time faculty.

The program consists of 8 units delivered over 16 weeks during the spring semester of 2012 and includes 4 face-to-face meetings scheduled on Fridays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The remaining coursework will be completed online. To be successful in this course, we estimate that you will need to commit to 8 hours of work a week. Faculty can also receive up to 8 hours of individual assistance from instructional designers. Open lab hours with instructional designers will also be available. Proposals will be reviewed and priority given to:
1. High demand courses with consistent enrollment demand over the last three years including summers
2. Courses that are deemed strategic in planning eLearning degree programs
3. Courses that are part of an existing eLearning plan within your College/School/Department.

The Arthur and Mata Jaffe Center for Book Arts at FAU Libraries is accepting applications for its Helen M. Salzberg Artist-in-Residence Program for the Spring 2012 semester. Established this year by Salzberg, a folk artist and poet, the program allows artists working in the book arts to spend 12 weeks working, teaching workshops and mentoring students at the Jaffe Center, which is located on the third floor of the Wimberly Library on the Boca Raton campus.

The artist in residence will receive a $5,000 stipend for the 12-week semester and is responsible for transportation, housing, parking, meals and materials a required creative project. The Jaffe Center revolves around a core collection of artists' books and focuses on all aspects of the book arts, including hand papermaking and paper decoration, letterpress printing and alternative print techniques, and bookbinding. The Division of Research is pleased to announce a new University-wide Faculty Research Seed Grant Program to stimulate the development of innovative research ideas and collaborations that will ultimately lead to increased support from outside funding agencies. This program was created to encourage researchers to collaborate on large, externally funded projects; support early-stage researchers in their efforts to establish a record of successful preliminary research; and assist principal investigators who have received favorable reviews conduct additional research for resubmissions.

Funding for this program has been made possible by a special $200,000 appropriation from President Saunders. The grant applications will be evaluated by the end of this semester, and project start dates can be as early as January 2012. The program allows for up to $20,000 for collaboration projects and $5,000 for individual projects. The number of projects to be funded will depend upon the quality and types of proposals submitted. The Boren Award for Study Abroad is also available for the 2012-13 Academic Year. Boren Awards provide a unique funding opportunity for U.S. students to study in world regions critical to U.S. interests (including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East). The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded. The Boren Scholarships provide opportunities for undergraduate students to study in countries that are generally underrepresented in study abroad. Summer 2012 programs for STEM areas are also allowed. The FAU campus deadline for undergraduates is Jan. 11, 2012; after a campus review the final application must be sent by Feb. 9, 2012. The Boren Fellowships allow graduate students to add an important international and language component to their graduate studies. The MacArthur Campus Library gallery will host Nazare Feliciano, a Palm Beach State College professor and artist, who will demonstrate Sumi-e-painting in conjunction with the opening of the exhibition "Chiura Obata - Ways of Art," on Wednesday, Nov. 2 at 3:30 p.m. at FAU Jupiter. Sumi-e, a very simple and elegant Japanese ink drawing, is achieved by using black ink on white paper. The "Chiura Obata: Ways of Art" exhibition features paintings of plants and animals created between 1943 and 1945 by Chiura Obata, an artist and educator, who came to the U.S. from Japan in 1903. The exhibition, which runs from Friday, Oct. 28, through Thursday, Dec. 16, also features wood carvings. The materials are from the personal collection of Marjorie J. McConnell, the mother of FAU professor Brian E. McConnell, the exhibition’s curator. The MacArthur Campus Library gallery will host the "Chiura Obata: Ways of Art" exhibition featuring paintings of plants and animals created between 1943 and 1945 by Chiura Obata, an artist and educator, who came to the U.S. from Japan in 1903. The exhibition, which runs from Friday, Oct. 28, through Thursday, Dec. 16, also features wood carvings. The materials are from the personal collection of Marjorie J. McConnell, the mother of FAU professor Brian E. McConnell, the exhibition’s curator. "Courage Takes Flight: The Life and Times of Harold Glasser," an exhibition that highlights the life of Glasser, a decorated World War II bombardier and former Miss Universe, Inc. president, runs through Friday, Dec. 16, at the Wimberly Library on the Boca Raton campus. Among the display items are historic war photographs, Glasser's bombardier's jacket, his 12 combat decorations, intriguing documents, a Miss Universe crown he designed during his 27-year tenure as president, honorary keys to cities around the world and education records. "The Art of the Image: Photography by Nathan Dean," an eclectic mix of images captured by Nathan Dean, an award-winning photographer and professor emeritus of the Charles E. Dean's images are notable for their simple, clean composition and brilliant use of light and shadow. The University Galleries presents the 2011 Biennial Faculty Exhibition through Nov. 12, in the Schmidt and Ritter Galleries on the Boca Raton campus. Older adults, 55-75 years of age and older, are wanted for the following study: "Relationship between Cognitive Function and Physical Activity Levels"

What are the requirements for participation?
Good health and be able to make a one-time (brief) visit to the FAU Exercise Science Lab.

What will I do?
Fill out a Physical Activity Questionnaire and perform a manual cognitive function test.

What can I expect to get out of my participation?
You will gain an understanding of how physical fitness is related to cognitive health. You will also be given the option of having your body composition measured and given an exercise prescription, a $75 value.

How long will the visit last?
About 30-40 minutes

The Language Development Lab, under the direction of Professor Erika Hoff, is conducting a federally funded study of early monolingual and bilingual development. We are looking for 24- to 30-month-old children who are learning Spanish at home and at least one parent was born in a Spanish-speaking country. For participating, you will receive $150 in gift cards and your child will get a gift and a t-shirt. With your permission, we will contact you again every 6 months until your child is 5 years old. We will pay for your time at each visit. If you complete this study through the age of 5 years, you will receive a total of $1,000 in gift cards.

We are also looking for 24- to 30-month-old children who are learning only English at home. For participating, you will receive $50 in gift cards and your child will get a gift and a t-shirt. With your permission, we will contact you again every 6 months until your child is 5 years old. We will pay you for your time at each visit. If you complete the study through the age of 5 years you will receive a total of $400 in gift cards. We plan to study children's language development from 2 years and 6 months to 5 years.

The purpose of these studies is to gain a better understanding of how language develops during this period. We will come to your home or you can come to our playroom on the Davie campus of Florida Atlantic University or to our office on the Boca Raton campus -- whichever is easier for you. The Communication Disorders Clinic is located on the 4th floor of the College of Education building on the Boca Raton campus and provides speech, language and hearing diagnostic and therapy services -- including accent reduction therapy -- to children and adults. Services are available Monday through Friday during every semester on a space-available basis. Appointments for diagnostic or treatment services may be made by calling Maria at 561-297-2258. Payment can now be made by VISA or MasterCard.

The clinic offers Stroke Support and a Stuttering Support groups, each meeting once a month. Interested parties should contact the clinic for details. FAU faculty and staff members and their families receive a 50 percent discount for all services. Full-time FAU students receive a 50 percent discount for evaluations and then are charged $10 per treatment session.
