The Homecoming Parade is becoming a great tradition at FAU -- every year, it gets bigger and better! Sponsored Programs in the Division of Research will move to Suites 227/228 in the Student Services Building (SU-80) from the Administration Building on Friday, Oct. 21. The Grantsera server will be offline during the move, and is expected to be unavailable from Thursday afternoon, Oct. 20, to Monday morning, Oct. 24. Login to the server will not be possible during this period.

Principal investigators submitting proposals around the move date should plan accordingly and submit them no later than Wednesday, Oct. 19, or after Tuesday, Oct. 25. If you have not done so already, please communicate with your sponsored programs proposal and contract administrator if you plan to submit a proposal in October.

Telephone numbers for sponsored programs staff will not change. Staff members will not be accessible at their office numbers while telephones are moved on Thursday afternoon, Oct. 20. Telephone access should resume on Friday, Oct. 21.

As part of National Cyber Security Awareness Month, FAU is focusing on educating students, faculty and staff about how to secure their parts of cyberspace, mobile devices, laptops, tablets, desktop computers, their passwords, personal information and data as well as the University's critical infrastructure. A "50 on the 50" black-tie gala will be held on on Saturday, Oct. 29, at 6:30 p.m. in the Tower of the new, 30,000-seat Football Stadium on the Boca Raton campus. Highlights of the gala include a "half-time" show on the field; a silent auction featuring rounds of golf, tickets to local attractions, computers, gift cards and more; and opportunities to see FAU's 50th Anniversary Book brought to life through a video presentation. While providing an opportunity for the University's friends and supporters to join in the celebration, the gala also serves as a fundraiser for the President's Scholarship Challenge, which has raised more than $200,000 so far, and 61 students have been awarded scholarships this year. The FAU LGBTQA Resource Center is celebrating LGBTQA History Month with a number of events, including a screening of the documentary "Ruthie & Connie: Every Room in the House" on Tuesday, Oct. 18 and LGBT History at FAU and Beyond: An Evening with Dr. Fred Fejes on Tuesday Oct. 25, 7 to 9 p.m. (see listing under Oct. 25). FAU's University Catalog will be undergoing its revision process this fall in preparation for the 2012-2013 online edition. The Registrar's Office invites you to submit your changes. The next deadline for submission of applications for undergraduate research grants is Oct. 17. Students receiving funding under this program are expected to present their findings at the annual Undergraduate Research Symposium on April 6, 2012. The Arthur and Mata Jaffe Center for Book Arts at FAU Libraries is accepting applications for its Helen M. Salzberg Artist-in-Residence Program for the Spring 2012 semester. Established this year by Salzberg, a folk artist and poet, the program allows artists working in the book arts to spend 12 weeks working, teaching workshops and mentoring students at the Jaffe Center, which is located on the third floor of the Wimberly Library on the Boca Raton campus.

The artist in residence will receive a $5,000 stipend for the 12-week semester and is responsible for transportation, housing, parking, meals and materials a required creative project. The Jaffe Center revolves around a core collection of artists' books and focuses on all aspects of the book arts, including hand papermaking and paper decoration, letterpress printing and alternative print techniques, and bookbinding. The Boren Award for Study Abroad is also available for the 2012-13 Academic Year. Boren Awards provide a unique funding opportunity for U.S. students to study in world regions critical to U.S. interests (including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East). The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded. The Boren Scholarships provide opportunities for undergraduate students to study in countries that are generally underrepresented in study abroad. Summer 2012 programs for STEM areas are also allowed. The FAU campus deadline for undergraduates is Jan. 11, 2012; after a campus review the final application must be sent by Feb. 9, 2012. The Boren Fellowships allow graduate students to add an important international and language component to their graduate studies. "The Art of the Image: Photography by Nathan Dean," an eclectic mix of images captured by Nathan Dean, an award-winning photographer and professor emeritus of the Charles E. Dean's images are notable for their simple, clean composition and brilliant use of light and shadow. Older adults, 55-75 years of age and older, are wanted for the following study: "Relationship between Cognitive Function and Physical Activity Levels"

What are the requirements for participation?
Good health and be able to make a one-time (brief) visit to the FAU Exercise Science Lab.

What will I do?
Fill out a Physical Activity Questionnaire and perform a manual cognitive function test.

What can I expect to get out of my participation?
You will gain an understanding of how physical fitness is related to cognitive health. You will also be given the option of having your body composition measured and given an exercise prescription, a $75 value.

How long will the visit last?
About 30-40 minutes

The Language Development Lab, under the direction of Professor Erika Hoff, is conducting a federally funded study of early monolingual and bilingual development. We are looking for 24- to 30-month-old children who are learning Spanish at home and at least one parent was born in a Spanish-speaking country. For participating, you will receive $150 in gift cards and your child will get a gift and a t-shirt. With your permission, we will contact you again every 6 months until your child is 5 years old. We will pay for your time at each visit. If you complete this study through the age of 5 years, you will receive a total of $1,000 in gift cards.

We are also looking for 24- to 30-month-old children who are learning only English at home. For participating, you will receive $50 in gift cards and your child will get a gift and a t-shirt. With your permission, we will contact you again every 6 months until your child is 5 years old. We will pay you for your time at each visit. If you complete the study through the age of 5 years you will receive a total of $400 in gift cards. We plan to study children's language development from 2 years and 6 months to 5 years.

The purpose of these studies is to gain a better understanding of how language develops during this period. We will come to your home or you can come to our playroom on the Davie campus of Florida Atlantic University or to our office on the Boca Raton campus -- whichever is easier for you. The Communication Disorders Clinic is located on the 4th floor of the College of Education building on the Boca Raton campus and provides speech, language and hearing diagnostic and therapy services -- including accent reduction therapy -- to children and adults. Services are available Monday through Friday during every semester on a space-available basis. Appointments for diagnostic or treatment services may be made by calling Maria at 561-297-2258. Payment can now be made by VISA or MasterCard.

The clinic offers Stroke Support and a Stuttering Support groups, each meeting once a month. Interested parties should contact the clinic for details. FAU faculty and staff members and their families receive a 50 percent discount for all services. Full-time FAU students receive a 50 percent discount for evaluations and then are charged $10 per treatment session.
