2009 FLC Descriptions

The Fall 2009 FLC class schedules are available NOW! Scroll down to the FLC that interests you and click the link to see YOUR first college semester's schedule!!!  Before signing up for the FLC, you can see what your actual class days/times will be. View schedules by clicking the links within each FLC below. **Please note that FLC schedules typically require a student to attend classes 5-days/week (Monday-Friday) and breaks are built into your schedule to allow you to study and attend programs/events with others in your FLC. If you want classes only a few days/week or at specific times, the FLC might not be right for you.


ARCHITECTURE FLC        
This FLC is ONLY available to students who are accepted through the School of Architecture application process as pre-Architecture majors. Students in this FLC will have the opportunity to work closely with other students, faculty, and advisors within the School of Architecture. This FLC will allow students to develop critical thinking skills and learn about what it takes to succeed as an architecture student.
The SLS course within the program will give students insight into the Architecture profession and will be taught by Todd Hendrick, advisor for students within the major.

ARTS and LETTERS FLC 
The Arts and Letters FLC is geared toward students who are majoring in a variety of liberal arts areas including: Communication, English, History, Philosophy, Political Science, Sociology, Languages & Linguistics, and Arts & Humanities. The Arts and Letters FLC allows students the opportunity to develop critical thinking skills and learn more about the arts. Your sociology instructor in this community is one of FAU's most prized faculty members— Dr. Gina Carreno—and she serves as your SLS instructor as well!

BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES FLC 
The Biological Sciences FLC is geared toward students interested in areas ranging from Marine Biology and Environmental Science to Molecular Biology, Microbiology and beyond! Students interested in Pre-Medical or Pre-Professional studies are also welcome to join this FLC.

BUSINESS FLC 
The Business FLC is available for students who are considering majors in: Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, Finance, Health Administration, Human Resource Management, International Business and Trade, Management, Management Information Systems, Marketing, Real Estate or Small Business and Entrepreneurship. The SLS course in the Business FLC is taught by an advisor in the College of Business who will help you succeed!

COMMUNICATION FLC 
Communication is one of the fastest growing fields in the global economy, as well as one of the most popular majors offered at FAU. This FLC is designed to give an edge to students in all areas of communication, including film-making, news media, rhetoric and more. The SLS instructor for this FLC, Carole Pfeffer, is a graduate from the School of Communication and has worked with local radio and public relations firms to bring real-world experiences to you!

COMMUTING CONNECTIONS FLC

Are you a freshman student who will be living off campus for your first semester?  Do you have to struggle through rush hour traffic to get to FAU?  Will that perfect parking space be a great way to start your day?  If you answered yes to any of these questions, we have a great option for you! 

Commuting Connections is a Freshman Learning Community specific to commuter students and is open to students in ALL majors.  The Center for Learning And Student Success will arrange a convenient schedule for your first semester at FAU that will work best with commuting to campus.

Since commuter students usually go to class and then go straight home, this FLC will create a “community” for those students here on campus.  Students may even be able to start carpooling with another member of the community that lives in the same neighborhood!  In addition to connecting with other first-year students, you will connect with your Dean of Students, Dr. Corey King, as you take a first-semester course with one of the top leaders on campus!

CRIMINAL JUSTICE FLC 
The Criminal Justice Learning Community is for students considering a major in Criminology and Criminal Justice. A major in Criminology and Criminal Justice provides students with knowledge about the nature and causes of crime and delinquency, law and the legal system for juveniles and adults in American society, and the decision processes of criminal justice agencies. Students are broadly educated within a general education framework in the liberal arts and also provided with courses that directly apply to careers within the criminal and juvenile justice systems and the study of law. FAU Instructor and former Special Agent with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration - Richard Mangan will bring the major to life in teaching the SLS course for this FLC.

EDUCATION FLC 
This FLC is for students considering majors within the College of Education and  planning to get teacher certification in Elementary Education, Exceptional Student Education, or Secondary Education.  Professor Lori Dassa excites students about teaching in the Education FLC and even provides opportunities for students to get practical experience during their first-year of college! Students planning to teach at the secondary level (particularly in math or science) can substitute a higher level math or science course for the Geography or Sociology course listed below.

ENGINEERING FLC 
Students majoring in Engineering must complete a rigorous curriculum, therefore support from other students is essential for student success. The Engineering FLC will provide you the opportunity to study with other Engineering majors in the same classes, while learning about all of the exciting things you can do with a degree in the field.

EXPLORE FLC for UNDECIDED MAJORS 
The Explore FLC is for students who have not decided on a major at this time, or who have selected a major, but are not sure that they will stick with that degree program. This FLC allows students the opportunity to explore different majors at FAU and possible career paths. Extensive career development and major exploration opportunities are integrated into your SLS class.

FIRST IN THE FAMILY FLC 

If you are the first person in your family to attend college then this is the perfect Freshman Learning Community for you.  This FLC will provide you the support you need to be a successful college student.  Your friends and family members may not understand what it is like to be a college student today, so we will guide you through your freshman year with helpful tips and tricks. This FLC is open to students in ALL majors.  Lauren Adamo from Student Affairs, who was a first generation college student, will be teaching your SLS class.  She will be able to give you first hand advice as you begin your journey through FAU.

The First in the Family FLC consists of the following courses (click here for actual schedule):

GO GLOBAL GIVE LOCAL (GGGL) FLC 
Do global issues interest you? Do you like helping others? Do you want to add an international experience to your academic career? If you answered “YES” then this FLC is for YOU! The Go Global Give Local FLC is open to all first-year students from all disciplines, who would like to experience world cultures and get involved with local communities through Study Abroad Programs and Community Service experiences.
Students who take part in the GGGL FLC will take courses that will help them transition from high school to college as well as other courses for their majors.  The GGGL FLC is the first part of a four year program designed to create reflective students ready to become leaders in their community and profession while developing skills and expanding their knowledge for a 21st century global environment. Students in the GGGL FLC will receive personalized support and guidance and have many opportunities to participate in forums with international visitors and global themed events. Also, students will participate in meaningful community service activities related to their major in order to “Give Local” as they prepare to “Go Global” in their 3rd year of the GGGL program. Students who continue in the GGGL program will receive a study abroad scholarship
(subject to availability), and guidance in pursuing additional scholarship funding. Get ready to explore your world!

HOSPITALITY and TOURISM MANAGEMENT FLC  (NOT AVAILABLE FALL 2009)
The Hospitality and Tourism Management FLC is geared toward students considering a career in the hospitality industry which includes such segments as food service, lodging, senior living, convention centers, sports facilities, entertainment services, meeting and event management, cruise lines and time shares. The Learning Strategies course in this learning community is taught by Peter Ricci, a Faculty member in the Hospitality and Tourism Management program in the College of Business, and includes guest speakers from various industry segments as well as the discussion of the economic importance of the overall industry and current industry trends.

LEADERSHIP FLC 
Are you a born leader? Have you learned how to be a leader with time and experience? Or do you just want to learn about being a leader and leadership styles? This FLC is for YOU! The Leadership FLC is open to students from nearly all majors who are aspiring leaders on campus. In addition to meeting other future student leaders, you will meet current campus leaders, learn leadership theory, and be involved with campus events.
The Leadership FLC consists of the following courses (click here for actual schedules):

MUSIC FLC 
Open to all first-year students admitted to the music major through audition. The School of the Arts and the Department of Music faculty are STRONGLY encouraging any student who is admitted to the music major through the audition process to join a Music learning community. This program will allow music students to learn together and practice together while exploring their love for music and performance.
In the Music FLC, the SLS course will emphasize the skills necessary in making the transition from high school to college, with an added emphasis on music and the art of listening. This course will be taught by a faculty member from the Music department who you will be working with through the next several years.

NURSING FLC 
Since admission to the Nursing program at the junior level is very competitive, freshmen majoring in pre-nursing must work hard to maintain solid grades. Students who participate in the Nursing FLC have an advantage in terms of admission to the Nursing program, as they learn about what it takes to be a successful nursing student during the FLC. The SLS course is taught by a College of Nursing staff member who can answer your questions about requirements, the application process and nursing as a career. As grades are very important in the admission process for the nursing program, students in the FLC can work with other pre-nursing students to excel in their courses.

PRE-HEALTH PROFESSIONS FLC 
Since there is a strong correlation between SAT or ACT test scores and success on the MCAT or other professional school admission exams, the Pre-Med/Pre-Professional FLC requires a minimum 1100 SAT or 24 ACT to enroll in the FLC for Pre-Health Professions majors. Students who do not meet the stated requirements might want to consider the Science or Biological Science FLCs.

The Pre-Health Professions FLC is available for students considering Pre-Health Professions majors including: pre-med, pre-veterinary, pre-optometry, pre-dental nd pre-pharmacy. Admission to a Medical/Professional school is a very complicated and competitive process that requires exceptional grades, community involvement, and leadership experience. This FLC helps students learn the keys to being competitive applicants, while providing the support necessary for students to excel in the science curriculum. The Current Issues in Biomedicine course is ONLY available to students in the Pre-Health Professions FLC.

PSYCHOLOGY FLC 
Psychology is a behavioral science that studies the behavior of humans and nonhuman animals. Many people associate the term “psychology” with professionals who provide counseling services, but in actuality psychology is a broad field with many other specialties in addition to counseling psychology. In the Psychology FLC, we will explore career options for students who are considering majoring in psychology. Students will work with other students and faculty who have interests in the field. Your SLS instructor, Dr. James Jakubow, is also your instructor for the General Psychology course, allowing you to develop a close relationship with your faculty member.

SCIENCE FLC 
The FLC for Science majors is for students who are majoring in any of the areas within the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science, including: biological sciences, chemistry, geography, geology, mathematics, physics, pre-health, and psychology. The Science FLC allows students the opportunity to work with other science majors while completing a rigorous course load.
