Bouquet of Gene Expression

Bouquet of Gene Expression

Photography by Fernanda Salomão Del Bianco, Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College

Picture depicts the brain of the fruit fly. Expression of cytosolic green fluorescent protein (GFP) and mCherry-tagged Distracted protein happening simultaneously under the control of the Distracted gene (Dsd). The regulatory sequences show its gene [removed]in green) and protein localization (magenta), with the pink coloring representing flowers, and gene expression the leaves of a bouquet. The labeling reveals that the protein is most abundant in somas and the lack of co-labeling (showing together of) GFP in some somas implies that the protein negatively regulates its own gene expression. This image was taken with a 20x objective lens using a Nikon AR1 confocal microscope.
