This picture is part of a photovoice study on students attending college while homeless. Five students took photographs they felt represented their lived experiences attending college while homeless and explained them to each other in a group. This student stated: "When I got my dog, he wasn't really for me. He was for someone else, but I ended up getting him because they weren't able to take care of him. I can say that taking care of someone else actually helps you take care of yourself. When you know someone depends on you, it makes it less likely that you will give up on yourself." Together, the students developed the following shared meaning: "A lot of students who struggle with housing feel like they are on their own. There are few places that can provide an escape. Students like us don't always have family support, and we benefit from building peer networks." To address this need, the students indicated that universities should support organizations on campus for students who have experienced homelessness to build networks. They referred to one organization in particular Champions Empowering Champions‚ a nonprofit organization that has supported Florida Atlantic students who have experienced foster care or homelessness for over five years.
