Microsensors measuring internal gas dynamics of seagrass in Florida Bay - Seagrasses are the only flowering plants that live in the oceans. This photograph shows us measuring internal plant gas dynamics using 100 micron glass microsensors in Florida Bay. Seagrasses produce oxygen via photosynthesis but rely on dissolved oxygen from the water at night to prevent hypoxia and toxic gas intrusion. This state-of-the-art method of examining seagrass gas dynamics is providing a mechanistic understanding of large-scale seagrass die-offs globally.
