Metal Working In The Himalayas

Metal Working In The Himalayas

Photography by Abdul Nasir Khan, Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College

This traditional Tibetan-style pendant called a "ser kau" was handcrafted by a Himalayan goldsmith over several weeks. The photograph was taken during fieldwork in India as part of a research project documenting labor practices in the Ladakh region. During this time I observed traditional metallurgy and metal working techniques in the high altitude Himalayas. The goldwork is embellished with precious stones from the region that have been traded for centuries. This jewelry piece is representative of social status and plays an important role in local marriages.
