New Coastal Landscapes

New Coastal Landscapes

Photography by Adriana Garriga-López, Ph.D., Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters

Beach loss and sea-level rise have led to the deterioration of coastal areas in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico and all over the archipelago. This photograph shows how the decay creates new coastal landscapes that are dominated by rubble and generates hazardous conditions for beachgoers, swimmers, fishers and coastal foragers. More needs to be done to encourage site expansion and relocation away from dangerous, flood-prone coastal areas and to protect the population, as well as Puerto Rico's important natural and cultural resources.
