Due to violence and religious uprisings in the area, a large tract of lowland rainforest in southeast Thailand has survived incursions, conversions and development to palm oil and rubber plantations. Nine species of rarely seen hornbills, all endangered or vulnerable, have been reported in the forest. Among these include the very rare Wrinkled and Wreathed species. The photograph shows a male Rhinoceros Hornbill, the only species spotted during a week-long exploration in the forest (late July 2024). When compared to its female partner (also captured on photo), sexual dimorphism was evident in two ways (a) eye color, with males having red eyes and females having blue eyes and (b) absence of black strip on casques of females while males have the black strip on its casques.
