Technological innovations of the 21st Century raise societal challenges that demand focused, interdisciplinary efforts. FAU recognizes this and brings philosophical and social considerations together with scientific innovations to help humans better navigate this brave new world.
To lead the effort, FAU hired Susan Schneider, Ph.D., to the position of William F. Dietrich distinguished professor in philosophy in the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters, a joint appointment with FAU’s Brain Institute, as founding director of the Center for the Future Mind.
Elan Barenholtz, Ph.D., an associate professor of psychology in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science, is assistant director of the center. Berenholtz is also co-director of the Machine Perception and Cognitive Robotics Lab and co-founder of the Rubin and Cindy Gruber Sandbox, an artificial intelligence lab on the Boca Raton campus.
Together they are collaborating with faculty across the university, including those in the Brain Institute, Institute for Sensing and Embedded Network Systems Engineering, the department of philosophy, the Center for Complex Systems and Brain Sciences in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine, and more.
Initiative sponsored by the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters and the FAU Brain Institute.
