Student Mental Health

Thank you for visiting the Provost’s Office faculty resource site for student mental health. The health and wellness of our students is a top priority for all of us. With the growing nationwide college student mental health crisis and the additional challenges posed by the global COVID-19 pandemic, our students need our support now more than ever. If you are visiting this site due to an immediate concern about a student, scroll down for a list of student support resources.

Provost's Welcome

Dr. Diane Alperin  hawkins Laura

Laura Vernon is Provost Fellow for Student Mental Health and we have convened a Faculty Task Force for Student Mental Health, whose diverse members can be found here. The task force has members from every college at FAU. Laura and the task force are working collaboratively on a range of mental health initiatives, with the goals of supporting student mental health and growing a campus culture of caring and engagement. The task force is analyzing mental health survey results, organizing a university-wide mental health summit, and offering faculty training in student crisis assistance. In all of these endeavors, we are partnering with our Student Affairs colleagues, particularly Owls Care Health Promotion, Counseling and Psychological Services, and the Dean of Students Office. To volunteer to be part of the faculty task force, to request mental health training for your faculty, to pose questions, or offer suggestions, please email Laura Vernon.

You can find more information about our initiatives, activities, events, and contact information throughout this website. Please check back here frequently as we continue to grow our mental health training and support resources. FAU recognizes that students, faculty, and staff learn and work best when they are psychologically, emotionally, and physical healthy. We seek to foster an environment that allows us all to thrive and reach our goals.

Thank you for your partnership is supporting our students and our FAU community.

Sincerely,

Student Support Resources:

If it is a safety emergency, call 911 and campus and local police will be alerted to assist.

If you have an immediate concern about the health or welfare of a student (but it is not a safety emergency), you can submit an online report for a range of issues at the FAU Report page here and the appropriate FAU support office will reach out to assist the student. When feasible, let the student know that you are asking FAU to reach out to them to try to help.

If you have questions or need to consult about a student issue, you can call to speak to staff in the Dean of Students Office at (561) 297-3542, the counseling center at (561) 799-8635, and/or Owls Care Health Promotion at (561) 297-1048. Students can also call these offices directly for help and support.

Laura has also launched FAU Thrive, a wellness and support network that includes mental health support resources by students for students, including weekly blogs, videos, and podcasts, and links to community mental health providers that offer FAU discounts through OwlPerks.
