4. Project Narrative: (Must be tied into what educational benefits will be received by the students, faculty; what goals are going to be achieved etc.)

The Libraries' interlibrary loan dept. uses the first generation of the Bookeye Planetary Scanner, to scan book chapters, magazine and newspaper articles, maps, and other library materials, both to scan our own library materials while doing minimal damage to them, and also to scan paper materials we requested from other libraries mailed to us so that we can e-mail them to our users who requested them and enabling our users to receive their requests without physically making a trip to the library.  We borrow about 16,000 items a year for our users, and lend a similar number to other libraries.  Students make up half of our borrowers, and faculty the other half.  The machine we have is old, not working well, and scans only in black and white, with limited resolution.  This requst is to allow us to purchase the Color Bookeye 2 Scanner,  This machine offers 24-bit color at 300 dpi, and grayscale at 400 dpi.  This will allow much better scans of large  format books and atlases, survey documents, items with color illustrations, etc., providing our users with a much better quality copy than they have been reciving, and better enabling us to meet our obligations to our partner libraries which borrow from us as well as lend to us.

5. How is this project aligned with the Strategic Plan? Please site specific goals and strategies.

This request would enhance our academic programs and research capacity (Goal 3), help us to better meet our institutional responsibilities in the wider community (Goal 4), and enhance the university's IT environment, as our scanner would also be available to others who have a need within the institution.
