4. Project Narrative: (Must be tied into what educational benefits will be received by the students, faculty; what goals are going to be achieved etc.)

The FAU Libraries offer approximately 400 public PCs to students and faculty, and the Libraries are a major access point for the university, for everything from proprietary databases we subscribe to, to the open internet, as well as registration, class participation through Blackboard, etc.   Older machines reach a point at which they can no longer handle current software, and of course they eventually break down altogether, at which point access is degraded. To maintain good access, we seek to replace many older / non-working machines at this point:  13 in the West Wing, ground floor of Wimberly Library;  1 replacement in the ground floor Media Center lab;  35 in the old Media Center / new main computer lab;  and 4 replacements at the Jupiter campus library.  In addition, we would like to add 6 new ones at Harbor Branch (where a new, expanded library is under construction), and 6 new ones for expanded access on the second floor of the Treasure Coast Library, where new ports were recently installed (this is an FAU-only computer area in this joint-use facility).   The total of all new and replacement machines is 65.

5. How is this project aligned with the Strategic Plan? Please site specific goals and strategies.

This project greatly improves and expands access to information for our students (Goal 1), enhances our academic programs and research capacity (Goal 3), helps meet community needs (Goal 4) because we also serve the general K-12, community college, and broader general public with our computer access, and Goal 5, if we can continue to offer state of the art PCs to our users.

6. Please complete the project cost spreadsheet below. Also, please describe briefly the elements that will be included as noted below:
  a) Any hardware requirements (which should comply with standards established by the IRM Standards)
