Undergraduate Research Symposium Friday, April 4, 2014 9:00 am - 5:00 pm Live Oak Pavilion & Grand Palm Room Boca Raton Campus

Few activities are as rewarding as research. In addition to the acquisition of invaluable research skills, students learn how knowledge is created and how that knowledge can be overturned with new evidence or new perspectives. They also learn how to work independently, how to overcome obstacles, and the importance of ethics and personal conduct in the research process. Undergraduate research takes place in every discipline – not only the life sciences and physical sciences but the humanities, social sciences, and creative and performing arts. Florida Atlantic University supports undergraduate research through a system of Undergraduate Research Grants, the annual Undergraduate Research Symposium and the Undergraduate Research Journal.

All faculty and staff are cordially invited to join us for the fourth annual Undergraduate Research Symposium on Friday, April 4, 2014 from 9:00am - 5:00pm in the Live Oak Pavilion on the Boca Raton Campus.

Highlights of the symposium will include a keynote speaker, oral and poster presentations by undergraduate students and a faculty panel on an undergraduate research and inquiry topic.

 Highlights of the Third Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium

This year's Undergraduate Research Symposium was a great success. Here are some of the major highlights of the symposium:

• Student presenters from all colleges were represented for the first time
• Over 100 students gave oral and poster presentations (not counting co-authors)
• The symposium was expanded to include both the live oak and Grand Palm room to accommodate the growth in the program
• Over 60 faculty and graduate students judged all oral and poster sessions (at least two per presentation)
• Prizes were awarded for first, second and third place oral and poster by college
• The event was attended by over 260 faculty and staff, student presenters, attendees and some proud parents and siblings that we registered
• Our keynote speaker, Daniel Cane, gave an inspirational talk during lunch and spent lots of time chatting with students and reviewing the posters. Dan also donated 5 tickets for FAU undergrads to attend to the TedX Delray Beach talk in May
• A representative from TedX Delray Beach attended and listened in to several oral sessions in the am. She was so pleased at the level of research our undergraduates were conducting
• We co-listed the undergraduate presenters from an Arts and Letters panel session that was being held on the same day
•  The event was co-sponsored by our Quality Enhancement Plan office and Undergraduate Studies in Academic Affairs and New Student and Owl Family Programs and other collaborators in Student Affairs
• A dinner reception was held post the event – sponsored by our student club the council for Scholarship and Inquiry (Student Government Club).  CSI also sponsored a canoeing trip the Sunday after the event for students

Instructions for Participating Students

Students engaged in undergraduate research may present their findings either through a poster presentation or an oral presentation. Because of space limitations, a maximum of two students per faculty mentor may present at the symposium.

Here are some important deadlines for abstract and poster submissions:

Deadline for abstract submission (100-150 words): Monday March 10^th, 2014
Notification of acceptance: Friday March 14^th, 2014
Deadline for poster file submission: Monday March 24^th, 2014 by 5.00PM

All students must prepare an abstract of 100-150 words. Student abstracts can be submitted by completing an online application form located here, by March 10^th .

 

Instructions for Posters
For your convenience we have provided 5 poster templates. You may choose to use any of the following for your poster:

• Poster Template 5

Your banner should contain a title for your project, the authors, and your college. Use the font and color choices provided on the template. Do not change the font colors and size from those in the template. Do not change the color of the background. Do not move or resize the logo.

The font for text within the poster should be no smaller than 32 point.

As you prepare your poster, please keep in mind that your audience may have no prior knowledge of your topic. You are encouraged to use graphs, photographs, and other visual aides to help the viewer understand your project.

As a condition of your participation in the Symposium, you must stand by your poster during the full time allotted to the poster session and be prepared to address questions or comments.

To have the poster printed, you must send the completed template via email attachment no later than March 24th to Dr. Donna Chamely-Wiik at qep@fau.edu or deliver the file to her office, GS 209H.

Oral Presentations
Students are allotted fifteen minutes to present their findings. Prepare to speak for no more than 10-12 minutes to allow time for questions. Keep in mind that your audience may have no prior knowledge of your topic.  Before discussing detailed findings, situate your research within some broader context.

FAU’s Digital Library (DL) maintains a lab equipped to digitally convert materials to facilitate access to educational resources as well as for the purpose of preservation. Materials digitized include monographs, maps, documents, newspapers, pamphlets, photographs (negatives/slides), and audio and video recordings.
