LLS Jupiter classes About the Program: The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at FAU, Jupiter is dedicated to enriching the lives of mature students by offering non-credit, university-level liberal arts courses for learners of all ages, backgrounds and interests. The program began in 1997 and currently has over 8,000 registered students.

Each year, more than 70 courses are taught by FAU professors and distinguished guest lecturers. Course topics include foreign policy, music, art, history, science, literature, philosophy, current events, films and many others, along with concerts and entertainment.

About the Students: Osher Lifelong Learning Jupiter students are individuals of all ages, some married and some single, some working but many retired, from virtually every part of the country. Many are college or post-college graduates.
 
About the Campus: Classes are held at the Elinor Bernon Rosenthal Lifelong Learning Complex, located on FAU's John D. MacArthur Campus in Jupiter, FL. The facility includes the 500-seat Tamar and Milton Maltz auditorium, and classrooms which seat 60 – 100 students.

All rooms feature state-of-the-art audio visual systems for large-screen projection of videos and computer-based presentations. Click here for details about the auditorium and classrooms.

Academic Calendar

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at FAU, Jupiter academic calendar consists of fall, winter/spring, and summer semesters.

 

Class Details
Classes run one hour and 30 minutes with a 10 - 15-minute break and a 15-minute question and answer period at the end of class. Instructors should plan to lecture for about one hour. Most instructors augment their presentations with audio/visual media, including PowerPoint presentations, Web content, CD's and DVDs.

Role of the Faculty

OLLI instructors are passionate and articulate lecturers, capable of instructing and inspiring an audience of adult learners. The instructor must create a course proposal suitable for our catalog and website that accurately and concisely describes the course and then take responsibility for leading that class.

It is important to remember that OLLI Jupiter classes have no tests, grades or homework. Students appreciate handouts and reading lists, where applicable, and most instructors augment their presentations with audio/visual media, including PowerPoint presentations, Web content, CDs and DVDs.

Compensation

Instructors are compensated based on the length of the course and/or the number of students who attend a given course. Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at FAU, Jupiter does not compensate for development time or costs. Compensation is as follows:

Course Duration

Payment  –  The Greater Of:

Eight-week Course $1000 minimum or $21 per registered student over 48 students
Six-week Course $750 minimum or $15.75 per registered student over 48 students
Four-week Course $500 minimum or $10.50 per registered student over 48 students
One-Time Lecture or Performance $300 minimum or $5 per registered student over 60 students


Program Incentive Grants

Osher Lifelong Learning at FAU, Jupiter can offer grants of up to $1000 to cover research and travel costs. To pursue a grant:

  • Qualify for a grant by teaching one course for OLLI Jupiter.
  • Apply for a grant by writing one paragraph explaining how you would use the funding.
  • Make a short presentation to the OLLI Jupiter advisory board.

Submitting a Proposal

Submitting online offers you the following benefits:
  • Immediate transmittal of your proposal to OLLI Jupiter staff.
  • Ability to store, review and modify any of your proposals during the submission process.
  • Email confirmations for you and OLLI Jupiter staff as proposals are received, reviewed, approved and scheduled.
New instructors must create a user name, password and a profile with contact information and CV.
A proposal should include the following:
  • Course Description – A brief description of 150-200 words, suitable for publication in the OLLI Jupiter catalog. The description should accurately reflect the course content, the goals of the course and how those goals will be reached.
  • Detail of Individual Lectures – For multi-week courses, a title and a 20-40 word description of each lecture.
  • Facilities and A/V Requests – Microphone, computer and A/V requirements, tables, chairs, etc.
