Smartphones & Cell Phones

As the use of smartphones and cells increased across FAU campuses, procedures and processes were put into effect by OIT to monitor purchases of devices and to inform users of their responsibilities and what OIT will be responsible for.  What follows should be of assistance to current smartphone/cell users and those contemplating a purchase.

1.Departments should not attempt to transfer existing smartphones or cells to new users without contacting OIT for proper configuration.  Failure to contact OIT may cause loss of features and functionality.  Tickets can be opened via FAU’s Helpdesk system at

A new request for a smartphone or cell phone must have Dean or Vice President level approval. CI requires that a "smartphone/cell" ticket be opened via FAU’s Helpdesk system at and a quote will be provided to the requestor to obtain Dean or Vice President level approval.  New orders will not be processed without this approval.

3. Individually purchased (non-FAU) smartphones need to be approved in advance on a case-by-case basis before being added to OIT’s Exchange Server. To request approval, open a "smartphone" ticket at

** INTERNATIONAL travel with FAU issued devices:  please do not travel internationally WITHOUT first opening a smartphone helpdesk ticket requesting Global add-on plans, at an additional cost, to meet your travel needs.  This includes cruises that enter international waters.  



OIT no longer provides new pager service. If your department would like to purchase a pager, you can visit USA Mobility to determine the pager model and service plan that best suits your needs and then submit a purchase requisition to the Purchasing Department for processing.
