Respondus: Online Testing


What is Respondus?

Respondus is a tool for creating and managing exams which can then either be printed or published directly to and administered via Blackboard or Canvas. FAU has a site license for Respondus, so faculty can request a copy of Respondus by filling out a service request at Online Service Desk.


  • Create exams and assessments offline using a Windows interface
  • Supports up to 15 question types
  • Import questions including embedded images
  • Use the Exam Wizard to create an assessment in minutes
  • "Spell check" an entire exam file (includes foreign languages)
  • Add tables, bulleted lists, font changes, and enhanced formatting (e.g. bold, italics) just like in a word processor
  • Insert mathematical and scientific symbols using the Respondus Equation Editor or MathType
  • Easily add images, audio and video to assessments; even resize or convert images automatically
  • Use the Media Wizard to create links to content on other servers (e.g. YouTube, Picasa)
  • Create random sets of questions in seconds with a one-step wizard
  • Publish exams and assessments directly to Blackboard or Canvas
  • Preview questions before publishing them to the server
  • Determine point values and exam/survey settings offline
  • Print exams/surveys directly from Respondus, or save files to MS Word or rich-text format

System Requirements

Operating System: Windows 7, Vista, XP

Memory: 32 MB RAM minimum

Hard Disk Space: 10 MB of free hard disk space for program files

Monitor: 1024x768 or 1280x720

NOTE:  Mac users can run Respondus using Windows emulation software such as Microsoft's Virtual PC.
