This internship will require that I learn and understand the laboratory procedures and associated safety procedures of the synthesis that I will be working on. My first task will be to prepare approximately fifty milligrams of a novel anti-cancer compound that inhibits KLF5-mediated tumor growth, for use in workup and analysis that will determine whether or not the compound is of enough interest to synthesize a useful quantity for animal trials. I will be learning the theory behind the synthetic pathway already established to arrive at the target compound, as well as the laboratory procedures to prepare, monitor, isolate, and verify the identity and purity of the product. I will be responsible for the proper execution of these techniques and procedures on a larger scale once I have prepared the 50mg amount, aiming for perhaps .75g of the compound, and the possible synthesis of structural analogs of the compound.

After I get more familiar with the research, I can start doing small activities in the lab and get more involved with the research.
