The proposed work is the development of an underwater sensor that is integrated with optical and acoustic techniques. The underwater sensor can help identify marine species near ocean current turbines (OCT) installations based on the detected geometries and acoustic signatures. The two modalities will help to identify the protected animals near OCT sites more accurately.
The REU participant student will build on the research progress of previous REU participants and will work on the sensor design, simulation, prototype fabrication, and field test. The outcome of this project should provide the foundation for future endeavors to investigate the underwater sensor for large area surveillance in a non-ideal OCT monitoring environment.
