Recycling Program

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What happens to collected recyclable material on the FAU campuses?

Waste Management collects the recyclables from dumpster on both campuses and hauls the loads by truck to Material Recycling Facilities, commonly called Murfs, where the items are further collected for resell.

  2. Besides recycling and the use of reuse water, what other "green" activities is the Buildings and Grounds Department, its employees and contractors doing to help the environment?

First of all, recycling exists for paper, cardboard and commingled (metal, glass, plastic) not only in the recycle containers on campus but from the campus offices and classrooms too. In regard to chemicals used for maintenance purposes, the standard for custodial and maintenance operations is that certified green products MUST be used if they are available. Buildings and Grounds is insistent that green products be used at the University in all aspects of its operations.
