Journal of Appreciative Education

(JAE) is an open-access e-journal committed to promoting educational theories, practices, and collaborations from an appreciative, strengths-based perspective. We define appreciative education as educational theories, innovative practices, and thoughtful reflections that challenge deficit-based thinking in teaching and learning across all levels of education.

Call for Papers

Special Issue: Appreciative Innovation

2020 has brought unexpected challenges and opportunities for educators to engage in innovative practices to promote strengths-based teaching and learning. The Journal of Appreciative Education seeks to highlight research and practices that highlight such innovations across educational settings. Sample topics of focus may include, but are not limited to:

  • theories and practices that promote antiracism, equity, and social justice;
  • innovations that support the transition to remote/hybrid/hyflex instruction;
  • strategies that enhance campus engagement, community building, and belonging;
  • approaches that cultivate social emotional wellbeing;
  • appreciative onboarding for new faculty, staff, and students;
  • appreciative supervision and administration.

The special issue features:

  • Innovative Practice: articles describing innovative practices that address current issues and challenges in educational settings
  • Research: empirical studies using qualitative, quantitative or mixed methods to examine or explore educational phenomenon and examine the impact of practices

Innovative Practice Section should be no more than 5,000 words in length. Research article should be 5,000 - 8,000 words in length including references, appendices, tables and figures.

Interested? Please submit an 80-120 word abstract and author(s) information at by February 15, 2021. The subject line should read: Appreciative Innovation Special Edition Abstract and Author(s) names. Abstracts will be reviewed and selected. Authors of selected abstracts will be sent an invitation providing additional information on next steps by March 15, 2021. Manuscripts are due May 15, 2021.

Call for Submissions

The editors invite submissions to the JAE from a wide range of perspectives in various educational fields in the following sections: Research Paper Section: includes full-length articles of (a) empirical research studies using quantitative, qualitative, or mixed-methods approaches, or (b) literature-based articles advancing theories and scholarships in appreciative education. Full-length articles for Research Section should be 5,000-8,000 words in lengths including references, appendices, tables, and figures. An abstract of 80-120 words should be included.

Innovative Practice Section: includes short praxis articles that: (a) detail innovative and effective ideas for improving practice through appreciative education, or (b) describe educational programs or courses highlighting appreciative perspectives in education. Short articles for Innovative Practice Section should be 800-1,500 words in length.

Forum Section: includes short articles that promote the dialogues of current wedge issues in teaching and learning from an appreciative perspective and the reflections on processes of research and practices in appreciative education. Short articles for Innovative Forum Section should be 800-1,500 words in length.
