Professor Park's article, "'Flourishing Through Traveling While Black: Unfiltered Voices of Black Travelers," was published in Tourism Management in August 2022. DOI: 10.1016/j.tourman.2022.104514
The article explored the voices of Black travelers on Twitter to understand how their experiences have evolved. The analysis of 70,149 tweets posted by 13,672 unique users indicated that the conversations around the Black Travel Movement initiated by organizations has been dominated by individuals from across the globe and professions. Correlation Explanation topic modeling of the tweets found that Black travelers tweeted about eight topics: belongingness, escape, experiential experiences, heritage, information-sharing, outdoors, safety, and wellness. The topics tied into the model of flourishing in transcendent, collective, interpersonal, psychological, and physical contexts. Year-by-year analysis of tweets posted by individual Black travelers indicated that the Black Travel Movement not only involves combating historical and systematic racism in the tourism industry, but also achieving the flourishing of Black travelers.
