Research - Professor Guilmette is interested in the role of 'affect' in ethics and politics, specifically the ways in which lasting systemic injustices like racism, homophobia, ableism, and misogyny operate as tacitly conscious affect scripts such as fear and disgust -- scripts that we inherit and must, in turn, modify. She argues that an ethics attuned to histories of oppression must study and intervene upon seemingly automatic habits of feeling, which demands engagement with those half-forgotten stories, assumptions, and associations that frame our perceptions of others. Recently she has been increasingly interested in the affective framing of bioethical issues in South Florida, such as addiction recovery, elderly and end-of-life care, disability and accessibility, and transgender healthcare.
