Research Thursdays - Department of Anthropology and the Florida Public Archaeology Network Host Archaeology Bootcamp Program

The Department of Anthropology and the Florida Public Archaeology Network (FPAN) will start the “Archaeology Bootcamp” program on Monday, March 1 at the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area. This program is part of a three-year grant FPAN was awarded by the Bureau of Land Management for archaeology and public interpretation. In addition to the Archaeology Bootcamp, the award amount of $136,288 also covers developing an app for the site and public programs like archaeology merit badges for boy scouts.

Through the grant, undergraduate students from FAU and all over the country come to Jupiter, Florida and learn about basic archaeological techniques like excavation, photogrammetry, and ground penetrating radar. This year’s program will be primarily virtual with opportunities for COVID compliant fieldwork.

FPAN is a statewide initiative and the southeast/southwest region is hosted by FAU’s Department of Anthropology. FPAN is dedicated to the protection of cultural resources, both on land and underwater, and to involving the public in the study of their past. The southeast region is housed on FAU’s Ft. Lauderdale campus. Sara Ayers-Rigsby is the Director of FAU Anthropology’s FPAN Center for the Southeast and Southwest regions of Florida. Malachi Fenn and Rachael Kangas are the Public Archaeology Coordinators for the region.
